French 101, Period 5 Class 1 [1-10]

Jean-Paul sat behind his desk, watching as the students filed in and wearing a slightly evil smirk on his face. Once they were all seated, he began speaking.

In French.

"Bonjour, et accueille à français 101. Je suis Professeur Beaubier." Then he switched back to English. "You probably could get the gist of that, I suspect. Now. I am Quebecois, from Montreal. This means that while I am from Canada, French is my native language, though I speak a somewhat different dialect than you might hear on the streets of Paris. The swears are different, for one thing. I know it is not usually the done thing in an academic class, but you will be learning those later, as I find them unendingly useful. Your syllabus will be ready next week; this week I have been dealing with a...situation." Also known as a sudden caramel addiction, but try getting him to admit that under torture. "This week, we are going to participate in an activity I am sure you are all quite thoroughly sick of: introductions. Name, where you are from, why you want to study French, and any experience with the language you might already have. We will start with you," he said, pointing to a student at random.

"I'm Dawn Summers; I'm from Sunnydale, California circa 2004 or so; and I want to study French because a lot of old church records and prophecies are either written in or translateable to French, and because I have some friends who either did live there or live there now. Um, I can speak a little bit, but I'm better at reading and writing."

Brooke did a good amount of staring at pretty much everything Dawn said. What was with this place?

Dawn stared back at Brooke. "What?"
gobrookeyourself: (are you serious?)

"Church records and prophecies?" she repeated, a little incredulously. "Must be hard to find others with that hobby."

"You must be new," she said, perhaps a bit condescendingly. "There are even way cute boys with that hobby here."

She perked up. "Names and room numbers?"

Re: Intros

"328 and 438," she answered with a very large grin. "The really tall dorky one with the book fetish is my boyfriend Sam. His brother Dean's a floor up, and slightly less taken. I think there's others, but they're my primaries. Oh, and Andrew, but I forget his room number."

"It's really not fair to tell me about the taken ones, you know," she said, but still made note of the others.

"You looking? I can try to think of other people, if you want." Not that this was a dangerous hobby of hers or anything.

Brooke paused, taking this in. "This is the first time anyone's ever had to ask me that. God, this new kid thing sucks."

"You'll get used to it pretty quickly, I bet. There's a high weirdness factor, but the guys are cute and a bunch of them like to walk around with no shirts on most of the time."
gobrookeyourself: (yay from me)

Oh, that so had its possibilities. "I was going to say I'd be open to getting a few names and doing the legwork myself, but if that's the case..."

"Yeah, there aren't a lot of shy guys here in Fandom. They kind of come with their own legs." Then she realized how that sounded and facepalmed at herself. "I meant that they kind of come out of the woodwork, not that most schools have a plethora of legless guys, obviously."

"I'm Brooke Davis, from Tree Hill, North Carolina, and I'm really only here because it seemed like a normal class with all the others there were to choose from," she confessed. "But I did get the gist of what you said in French!"

And then she added, just because, "And everything sounds hotter in French. Proven fact."

John was still cringing over the last time they'd talked about French, causing him to facepalm at the last thing she said.

Yeah, Brooke remembered that too, which was why she tossed off a little wink in his direction when she didn't think anyone else was looking. Just because she could.

"I'm Johnny Storm and I'm from New York City. I think learning French would be cool. Plus I think it would impress the girlfriend."

"I'm John Sheppard, from all over the place, actually; and I signed up for this class because I don't speak French and I figured a foreign language could only be useful."

"Yasutora Sado," he started. "Uh, people call me Chad. I'm from Mexico. And Japan. I'm interested in learning French because being..." There was a pause to think, "Quadralingual? Will be very helpful in my career. I don't really know any of it right now, though."

"My name is Tamaki Suou. I came from Japan, but my lineage is both Japanese and French. Naturally," he smiled, "I would like to be able to speak the language of my heritage."

He conveniently neglected to mention that he'd lived in France for a time and already knew some of the language. Maybe applying for this class was cheating a little bit, but he was actually still pretty interested in it. After all, learning the language in the actual country and finding out how it was taught in high school seemed an interesting comparison to make. He looked forward to being in French 101!

"My name's Jim Halpert and I'm from a town near Philadelphia," Jim said. "I'm looking to learn French because I think mocking people in French would be fun. Also, it seemed like a good 'normal' class."
