"Last week [NSFW]," Lulu began, "I introduced you all to two particular topics, and asked you to write about them, given what little knowledge you had about them. Then I assigned you homework -- you were to read two articles and then write about your changed reactions, if you had any." She smiled softly. "You can pass in your papers at the end of class; first, however, I'd like to discuss the topics and your reactions to them now that you've read the articles.

"A reminder as well: next week is your final exam. Do study; you might find it worth your while to spend particular time on the earlier parts of the class."

I later asked him what the real, non-sensational face of Furry fandom looks like.

"It all varies," he said. "Some people just like anthropomorphic art. As for people relating to animals, it ranges from 'I think they're cool' to 'I have traits in common, like I'm quiet as a mouse,' to 'Yes, I am a wolf in a human body and I must run free with my furry brothers!'"

I laughed. "Still beats being a Klingon. So what makes you a skunk?"

"I like the striking colors ... and I was a maladjusted kid. When a skunk walks into the room, everybody leaves."

"You may wonder," Lulu began, after the discussions had been wrapped up, "why I assigned you this particular assignment. In fact, this may be the most important lesson that I've taught during this class -- except, perhaps, for the lecture on safe sex. You see, this assignment is all about thinking critically on a topic. With sexual ideas, all too often the initial reaction to anything 'other than self' is disgust, revulsion, and shock. What I'd like you to do in the future is to move beyond your initial reactions. Find out more information. Make a strong decision rather than a reaction. It may still not be for you; you may still find it horrifying. If you make that informed, critical decision, however, you're not merely reacting, and that may be the best lesson I can teach you.

"I wrote that it didn't make sense, and that liking pain was stupid last week." Ino fiddled with her hair, and blushed, "I'm uh, well, I suppose a little bit of it is okay. But not, like, a lot. I still don't get that."

Completely ignoring what they were SUPPOSED to be talking about, Sokka chipped in with "Also, in cartoons, skunks are the ones that get all the hot babes."

"I want to reiterate," Sokka said, probably way too loudly, "that I think it's sick, disgusting, and wrong. And really, really hot."

"My opinion," Turtle responded, "is pretty much the same. Just not my thing." Her nose wrinkled.

Turtle, who felt confident that she knew her cartoons, dang it, arched an eyebrow and asked, "What kind of cartoons are you watching? None of those 'hot babes' ever want to be with the skunk, the skunk just thinks they do, which is, like, borderline molestation..."

Turtle's paper is pretty long, mostly because it's her going off on tangents a lot. But she supports all of her tangents with evidence.

"...They're just playing hard to get...?" Sokka ventured.

Turtle just facepalmed.

"Oh, yeah, I'm sure that's it. Seriously, though. Have we been watching the same cartoons? Because that's not hard to get. I should know!"

"No, he's... They..."

Suddenly, those cartoons made a lot more sense.

Sokka joined in Turtle's facepalming. "...Right. Yeah. Can we all pretend I wasn't just really stupid just then? That'd be really nice if we could."

Turtle gave a firm, knowing nod with the confidence of such an easily won discussion. "Nope. No can do. Already firmly remembered for the rest of time. But glad to know you see the conclusion that skunks are just....pervy. And delusional. And French. Apparently."

"Those particular skunks," Sokka corrected. "It's not fair to say that just those ones represent all skunks."

"True," Turtle allowed for a moment before pointing out, "However, based on that one skunk, I'll have to admit, I'm going to naturally want to avoid other skunks."
