15 Ways to Protect Yourself and Others - Week 12, Period 3

"So how many of you have had wilderness survival training?" Aly asked as the class congregated in the Danger Shop.  "Everyone who does?  On the right side of the room, please, and tell me your experience."

"Everyone who doesn't can stay on the left side."

She glanced at her two groups of people.  "Okay then."  And she tapped a sequence into the Danger Shop console that made what looked like a deserted - but not tropical - island appear around them.  "The goal today is for those with wilderness survival experience to partner up with someone who has little or no experience."  She smirked and gestured to the island.  "And the rest is here.  Your goal for the rest of the class period is to explore the island and set up shelter, find water to drink, and either find food or set up traps to begin to catch your own."

Aly grinned.  "It shouldn't be too hard.  The island's deserted of humans, true, but there are plenty of trees, forest animals, and a few sources or fresh water.  People who have wilderness survival experience?  Your priority is to protect your partner and keep him or her safe."

"I'm probably more comfortable in civilization such as it is," Dean admitted, "but my Dad taught me the basics of starting fires and tracking and all that shi- stuff."

"I'm from a tribe of hunters and fishers " Sokka answered, with a cocky grin. "Give me a knife, and I can survive just fine anywhere that's not a desert."

He was exaggerating a bit, but not as much as you'd probably expect.

"I took a Wilderness Survival workshop last summer," Bridge says as he moves over to the right side of the room. "And I've done some wilderness training with the rest of my squad back home."

"I know a little bit about starting fires and setting traps," Anders said, "and a little orienteering from some of my workshops summer before last. I haven't actually gotten the chance to really test those skills out, though."

"I had to make camp as I traveled across a desert -- twice -- and have learned more than a bit about hunting and trapping from my friends at home," Aravis said.

"I've had some training. A week long crash course of the basics."

"I have no wilderness training," she admitted, then added defensively, "but there isn't any wilderness on Shinon, so it's not entirely my fault."
