15 Ways to Protect Yourself and Others: Week 10, Period 3

Aly had listened to the radio (duh) and had quickly changed her lesson plans to match.

"I had another lesson plan for today," Aly said once everyone was there.  "But this one was on my list of topics too, and it seems far too appropriate for this week.  I hope you all don't need it, but here we go."

She handed out a thick booklet of First Aid situations along with a First Aid kit.  "In case you haven't been listening to the radio, there's a pretty nasty flu or something going around.  Already I see that there aren't quite as many people here as there usually are.  So...I hope none of this is needed and whatever sickness it is goes away quickly but this is helping healers 101."

"First thing?  Do what they tell you to and get out of their way," she said.  "Trust me, if you haven't been on the end of a doctor's lecture about how you're slowing them down when they're trying to help people?  You don't ever want to be.  It's...scary.  And I don't use that word all that often.  Secondly?  You need to take care of them too.  Healers are all stubborn, stubborn people who generally won't acknowledge they're sick if they're in the middle of a collapse.  So keep an eye on them, bring them sandwiches and coffee, and make sure they're not overworking.

"It sounds like one of the big problems right now is a fever," Aly continued after a long pause to look at the room more closely.  She frowned for a moment but continued.  "If you haven't taken care of people with a fever before, you want to be sure they're drinking as much water as possible and keep cold cloths nearby to help relieve the fever a bit.  Everything else?  What I said before.  Do what the doctors tell you to do."

She paused, eyeing the class again.  "If you're not feeling well or a friend's not feeling well, take them down to the clinic.  There's nothing that's worth infecting others or making yourself worse by not getting proper treatment.  Take care of each other.  You're all good at that."
