Popular Culture [November 8, 4th Period]

There was a flatscreen TV mounted on the board.

"We've talked classic rock now let's venture to pop music. Pop music is another branch of a genre called popular music, actually pop music is one of the more recognizable form of music today. An' it's really not that complicated some people even refer to pop music as bubblegum 'cause of its simplicity. Usually the lyrics are often about romance and heartbreak and well..." she arched an eyebrow, "sex."

"The 1980s produced one of the most number of pop music and you know this because of the hair, shoulder pads an' the very purple eyeshadow but mostly, because of this," Rose turned on the TV and a group of men with mullets proceeded to sing, "by the way, this is one of the more popular '80s band back then... they're called any guesses? If you think it has anything to do with the word 'pop' you're not wrong."

As soon as the song was done Rose clicked off the telly. "Short trivia, the eighties also saw the birth of a network so crucial to our culture it spawned a whole new lifestyle, an' that's the MTV. Somethin' we'll be discussin' soon and I hope you read up about the subject. An' one of your projects would be to create an MTV of your own... so..." Rose looked at them, "I hope you do take that class seriously."

Rose tilted her head and studied her class, "You lot have been in this time period for months now so I'm gonna put your knowledge about this era to the test... what are the top ten pop music artists to date (to date bein' early 1990s to... well today. Any question's you'll be havin' I'll be at the back."

(OOC: Please wait for OCD up. Slow Play is Life!)

There was a cough, something that sounded like "Teal Dear" and another cough from Chad.

There was actually a noticeable, no-question-about-it grin at that. "Kind of a tough question, though. Are we talkin' top ten based on quality, influence, popularity...?"

At which point Chad launched into a highly impressive and totally handwavey as the mun is way too dead from work for a freakin' thesis paper and extensive ramble regarding both perspectives, several tons of bands and why he felt they'd earned a place on the list. It could be considered a pretty in-depth ramble, probably more than Chad had ever talked about anything, but it was music here.

And he was totally a nerd when it came to music.

It was important.

Chad shrugged his shoulders. "I like music."

With a slight grunt of agreement, Chad nodded. "I'd like to help, yeah."

Blackheart thought for a moment, trying to place some of the most annoying bands he possibly could. After all, if he hated them, there was a good chance that misguided mortals everywhere liked them enough to make them big.

"The Backstreet Boys. Or N*Sync. Or those New Kids On The Block people."

Boy bands. Annoying enough to be popular.

Blackheart stared at Rose somewhat incredulously.

"I do hope you're joking," he insisted. "I only know about them because of all of the insane fangirls that we keep locked away in the 'Special Hell.'"

He wasn't making any indication that he was actually kidding about 'Special Hell.' But with Blackheart, could you ever really be sure?

Blackheart considered for a moment, and then he shrugged.

"We get a lot of My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy fans in Special Hell, too. They're slightly more tolerable than the screaming New Kids fanatics."

"I wouldn't know if Fall Out Boy is good or not," Blackheart confessed. "For all I hear about the music from up here, I haven't had the chance to do much listening to them. Though apparently there's a video involving monkeys that might appeal to some of the stranger demographics out there. And they're supposedly pretty." He shrugged his shoulders. "An idiot acquaintance seems absolutely positive that I'm Gerard Way, so I really shouldn't be surprised that you think I'd like My Chem also."

He wasn't going to mention that yes, he did in fact own the Black Parade album.

...

"But I don't wear eyeliner."

He could see how perhaps to an untrained mortal eye, it might look like he was wearing eyeliner. But no. No, he wasn't. Eyeliner was for emo kids, transvestites, and Gerard Way. Who possibly was both. Blackheart didn't much care.

"R.E.M., Nirvana, Maddona, Brittany Spears, Michael Jackson and American Idol?"

"I went with who I thought were the biggst, not neccesarily the ones I like. Michael Jackson kinda scares me these days. And the American Idol thing was a joke. Mostly."

"I mean he looks like a Zombie. No offense to the band at Caritas."
