Fandom Invasions Class #9 (Thursday period 3)

When the class entered the Danger Shop, they found themselves standing on the grounds around the school.

"Good morning," John said. "Last week was about zombies, this week we're going to be covering an invasion that was outside my own expertise. Which just goes to prove that no matter what you're used to dealing with, eventually in Fandom you're going to run into something completely outside your experience.

"For me, that was when we were invaded by dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. I never dealt with them before, but I took what I did know and applied it to that situation, with the result being that I have the makings of a saber tooth catskin rug if I wanted one." John grinned.

"So today's about using what you've learned in facing the other threats we've studied in this class, as well as any personal experience you have to deal with Fandom's version of a blast from the past."

"Positive is appreciated," Peter said. He shrugged. "It's not so much good or bad as it is confusing. Sam and I are just getting back on an even keel, you know?"

Because talking about this in the class taught by Sam's father was smart.

"Yeah?"

Claire smiled again, quietly.

"I saw him on Monday," she said, because she'd almost asked him about Peter then. "Stabbed myself through the hand."

"He got to see you?" Peter left that question right where it was, since he figured Claire knew what he was talking about, and part of keeping a secret was knowing when not to say things out loud.

"He asked," she said easily, not anywhere near as cautious as she'd been in the past.

"He's been helping me look up all this stuff about evolution and genetics."

"You can trust him," Peter said. Not that Claire hadn't figured that out already, but he wanted to give Sam his vote. "You think genetics has something to do with this?"

"I know," she said quickly before moving on, "yeah. I've got this book a friend gave me at my old school by some Indian doctor guy. It's really interesting."

"Huh," Peter said. "Mind if I borrow it sometime?"

Let the record show a rare moment of Peter actually looking to study something without being forced to by a teacher.

Claire understands the feeling. She never cared at all about biology until this.

"Not at all. I could drop in around your room?"

"Anytime," Peter said. "I suppose it's too much to hope that it doubles as an instruction manual?"

Claire smirked instead of offering an apology, and shook her head.

"I wish it did."

"Too bad," Peter said. "Guess I'll just have to keep practicing."

"Guess so," Claire said. "How's that coming?"

"It's coming," Peter said with a shrug. "I'm still a little freaked out that I can't control what I pick up. It makes me want to wear a sign asking anybody with dangerous powers to keep at least 20 feet back. Assuming that'd be far enough."

"Yeah, but as long as they haven't killed themselves yet, all powers are controllable, right?"

"I can't be the only person who has problems controlling his powers," Peter pointed out. Though saying so out loud made him wonder if he was, and emo accordingly.

"No, but you can learn from everyone you get them from," Claire responded logically. "People learn to control them."

"I'm just saying, what if they don't know either?" Peter asked.

"Well, they've had longer to figure it out than you have," Claire pointed out.

"What powers are more dangerous than your fireballing, anyway?"

"I don't know," Peter admitted. "But it could be out there. What if I could manipulate time? Or people's minds? Or kill with a thought?"

Claire wold have to admit that Peter had a point, except,

"OK, manipulating time would be pretty cool."

"Could get more hours in the day," Peter admitted.

"Could go back and correct any mistakes you make on your date tomorrow," Claire suggested.

"I like that we're anticipating that there will be mistakes," Peter said.

Claire pressed her mouth close, and inclined her head.

"You're right," she corrected herself. "I'm sure you'll be the perfect date."
