Combined Mathematics #8 [Friday 11-2, Period 4]
"So," Jean-Paul said without preamble, pacing before his class, "fractions. Say you have a pie, or a pizza. Something round. Fractions are always taught with round things in America for some reason. And you cut the pizza into eight slices. Each slice is one-eighth of the pizza, two slices is one-quarter, four is is one-half, you are in high school, please tell me you know this already. I know calculators are rotting the brains of American youth, but I continue to hope." Jean-Paul proceeded to talk at length, but very quickly because, speedster (anyone trying to take notes might consider weeping at this point), about all the things they needed to know about fractions: how to simplify, convert, divide, multiply, and convert. And then he took a deep breath and said, "And now your assignment is to discuss how you use fractions in your everyday life. The first person to mention pizza or pie will get an eraser thrown at them."
