When the students entered the Danger Shop, they found themselves standing in front of the school gates on a dark and foggy night.

"Good morning," John greeted them. "Hope you all had fun last night and didn't eat too much candy. Today's class we're going to be dealing with something else that seemed to be traditional Halloween fare." He grinned wolflishly. "Zombies."

Behind him in the streets of the town shadowy figures could be seen shambling about and low moaning could be heard. "Your objective? To get to Caritas where you'll find a book that has a spell to banish all zombies. The zombie objective? To eat your brains. Try to avoid that.

"As far as weapons go, you have what you have on you and what you can scavenge from the homes and businesses between here and your objective. Now this kind of situation isn't one you'd want to be doing alone, so find a partner to watch your back before you start." John looked at them with a wolfish smile. "Any questions?"

"If I thought throwing you to the zombies would help me pass the class, I would," Claire assured him.

"Or a baseball bat or something. Anything I can hit them with."

"I'm not sure killing the TA gets you a pass," Peter said. "Then again, that depends on what Dean told him about what it was like meeting Nathan."

From the shadows of a nearby alley, came the sound of moaning.

Claire turned around towards the alley, and backed up cautiously.

"If we were up against foot or finger eating zombies we'd be set," she remarked, and glanced around before setting her sights on a nearby sports store, at which she pointed.

"Hey, can you go fireball at them to give me cover? I wanna go over there."

"Absolutely," Peter said. He angled himself between Claire and the zombies, concentrated, and sent a blast of fire in the zombies' direction.

The was an eerie inhuman scream from the alley and several zombies stumbled out, too preoccupied with being on fire to attack.

"Thanks."

Claire didn't wait for anything else, and ran, flat out towards the Sports goods store.

Peter made his way after her. "Apparently they don't like being hot."

"Looks like."

Short of breath for a second, Claire looked around and grabbed the first thing she found.

It turned out to be a badminton racket so she dropped it and replaced it with a baseball bat instead.

"Think this'll work?"

"One way to find out," Peter said.

"Guess so."

She grinned at him, and stepped back out into the street.

Peter followed, doing his best to be stealthy. "Get a lot of zombies in Texas?"

"No, just brain eating psychos," Claire said, bitterness seeping into her cheerful exterior.

"You stopped him, though."

"I'd do it again too," Peter said.

More moaning came from down the street and shambling shadows were heading in their direction.

Claire turned towards the zombies, and shot a grin at Peter.

"Only this time I'm actually going to fight as well," she said.

Then she ran forward, holding her baseball bat up to swing hard at the first thing she saw.

Two zombies turn to face her, arms out to grab at her. Mmmm, cheerleader brains....

Peter held back, ready to cover her as needed.

Claire swung hard at the first zombie, closing her eyes before it could connect, because obviously that would help her aim.

She could only hope she's get both in one swing.

The bat connected with the first zombie's head, sending it flying. The head that is, the rest of the body stayed where it was for a second or two then fell backwards into the other zombie.

"Yes!" Claire yelled, pumping the air quickly. "Did you see that?"

"Not bad at all!" Peter said.

Claire would have stayed to cheer herself on, but instead she jerked her head in the direction of Caritas.

"Let's go."

"Better get a move on," Peter agreed.

Claire grinned and offered him a hand, so they could run up the street together.
