When the students filed into the Danger Shop they found two young girls standing with John in the usual lecture spot.

"Hi," the older one said, bouncing a little on her toes. "I'm Susannah Lynn and this is my half-sister Grace. Dad asked us to help him with this class since it's all about us.

"See, there was this big swirling thing, a..... vortex?" She looked up at John for confirmation of the word, grinning when he nodded and then continuing. "And a bunch of us kids got pulled through it and came to Fandom and got to meet our parents before they were our parents. It was really freaky and a little scary, but it was also a lot of fun." She giggled. "Seeing everybody's face when they realised we were their kids was really really funny.

"It was so much fun, that Dad decided that you should get a chance to play too! Isn't that great?" She turned and looked up at John again. "This is where you take over, right?"

John smiled and nodded. "It is. Thanks, Susannah." He addressed the class. "Fandom is always throwing the unexpected at you. And sometimes that isn't a hostile invasion. Sometimes it's the next generation. The object this class isn't to fight the invaders, but look after them. Keep them amused, fed, make sure they go to bed on time... you know. Be parents. And then make sure they get back to where they're supposed to be."

Grace pulled on John's pantleg. "Daddy? I wanna colour!"

John picked her up and smiled wryly at the class. "Sometimes it's easier to just beat something up."

"Right," she said, nodding solemnly and pocketing both pennies. "Should we celebrate our successful xtreasure hunt with more cake?"

"Coraline, Coraline, Coraline," Valentine chided gently, "when cake is involve, there's no question about it. Yes, we absolutely should celebrate with more cake."

"Does cake have a silent X?" XCoraline asked. "It does seem as though cake might be xtreasure, you know. Unless it were smushed by the couch, or covered in sand from being buried xtreasure."

"Actually, I think cake has a silent 'yum.' Entirely different, really." Valentine was so full of monkeybird dung.

"Yums aren't silent," XCoraline giggled. "They're pronounced mmmmmm."

"Oh, of course," XValentine laughed. "Mmmmmmmmmm. Do you think that has a silent X, then?"

"I can't imagine what xtreasure yums would have," Coraline laughed. "Seems like it should be the other way around."

"Xtreasure with yums?" Valentine seemed thoroughly interested, indeed. "Let's see if your exemplary hearing hears any Xs floating around the fridge, then, shall we?"

Coraline stood for a long moment and was very quiet.

"It's high up," she said, with a mischevious grin. "Check the freezer."

Valentine grinned down at her for a moment, then he opened up the freezer.

"Why, what's this I see? Ice cream?" He grinned down at her again and pulled out the xtreasure. "I must say, your ears are in fine working condition, Coraline."

"We're going to be a great success as xtreasure hunters," she beamed. "We should take time off from the circus to go and look."

... He had joined a circus?

... Okay, then.

"We absolutely should! Imagine all of the pennies and ice cream we might find!"

"Would Mum miss us terribly?" XCoraline asked. "If she had to run the circus by herself. With Grandmum and Granddad, I mean."

Valentine opened his mouth to reply. It was intended to be something horrible and snide about Helena. But he choked on it.

He swallowed it back and instead, he found himself smiling and kneeling and putting his arms around Coraline and giving a nod of his head.

"Of course she would," he assured her, much to his own surprise. "And that's why we'd take her along. She always was the adventure sort, wasn't she?"

"I suppose," XCoraline shrugged. "Perhaps we should, then. But that means splitting the xtreasure three ways, and not two."

Valentine grinned.

"And a bucket of ice cream gone three ways is hardly as satisfying as one split fifty-fifty, isn't it?"

"And someone should stay with the circus to help Granddad and Grandmum run it. Especially if they need to be off with the City of Light." Her logic was impeccable, except for the ways it was dead wrong.

...

"Yes, especially if... that." Valentine kind of stared at Coraline for a bit. What about Helena's parents, now?

...

"So! Ice cream!"
