Fandom Invasions Class #7 (Thursday period 3)

When the students filed into the Danger Shop they found two young girls standing with John in the usual lecture spot.

"Hi," the older one said, bouncing a little on her toes. "I'm Susannah Lynn and this is my half-sister Grace. Dad asked us to help him with this class since it's all about us.

"See, there was this big swirling thing, a..... vortex?" She looked up at John for confirmation of the word, grinning when he nodded and then continuing. "And a bunch of us kids got pulled through it and came to Fandom and got to meet our parents before they were our parents. It was really freaky and a little scary, but it was also a lot of fun." She giggled. "Seeing everybody's face when they realised we were their kids was really really funny.

"It was so much fun, that Dad decided that you should get a chance to play too! Isn't that great?" She turned and looked up at John again. "This is where you take over, right?"

John smiled and nodded. "It is. Thanks, Susannah." He addressed the class. "Fandom is always throwing the unexpected at you. And sometimes that isn't a hostile invasion. Sometimes it's the next generation. The object this class isn't to fight the invaders, but look after them. Keep them amused, fed, make sure they go to bed on time... you know. Be parents. And then make sure they get back to where they're supposed to be."

Grace pulled on John's pantleg. "Daddy? I wanna colour!"

John picked her up and smiled wryly at the class. "Sometimes it's easier to just beat something up."

[ooc: wait for ocd is up! Have at it.]

Karal led Taven down the hall, Altra trotting ahead of them, and opened the door to his room. Of all the strange things he'd encountered here, this was by far the strangest. "Here, that's my bed, and the bathroom is through there."

Altra curled up on the bed, taking the opportunity to grab a nap. "If Altra is taking up too much room, you can push him out of the way."

Taven went over to the bed and patted Altra not too lightly on the head. "Altra always makes room for me," he said. "He is the best Firecat ever."

Instead of climbing onto the bed though, Taven ducked down and began to worm himself under the bed.

"What are you doing?" Karal hit the floor and peered after him, ignoring - again - Altra's laughter.

"Looking," Taven said. "I want to see if you have any toys."

"I assure you, I don't," he said, reaching a hand in after him. "If you come out, you can play with Altra."

ALtra's head appeared over the edge of the bed. :Hey! Firecats are not toys.:

"But you heard him." Karal looked meaningfully at the 'cat. "Taven said you were the best Firecat ever. You wouldn't want to disappoint him, would you?"

Taven, sans hat, poked his head out from under the bed right next to Karal. "Mother said that Altra and I can only play together outside," he reported. "Why don't you have any toys?"

Altra looked smug and went back to doing an impression of a cat-fur throw. "Because, because," Karal was rarely at a loss for words, but this was one of those rare times, "because I don't play with toys," he finally said. "We could draw pictures? Or--" Inspiration struck. Sunlord, thank you. "--I could tell you a story, and you could draw pictures to go with it? I have some coloured pens and some paper."

"Oh, yes! A story!" Taven hauled himself out from under the bed, dusted himself off, realized he didn't have his hat, and crawled back under the bed to get it. When he crawled back out again, he dusted off the hat and stuck it on his head, completely ignoring that he was once again covered in dust.

He looked up at Karal. "You said you were going to tell me about when Mother saved you from dinosaurs."

Karal sat back on his heels and rested his chin on his hand, smiling despite himself as he watched the boy. "I will, but first, what does your mother say about climbing into bed all covered in dust?"

Taven didn't actually remember a rule about that.

He gave Karal a confused look. "I don't know, but I can imagine what she would say. Why?" He'd cleaned himself off already.

Twirling a finger in the air, he nodded at Taven. "You are slightly dusty. Two trips under the bed, and after the second you only cleaned your hat. But I think we can ignore it for today."

Taven beamed at Karal and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Father."

He turned and climbed onto the bed.

That was not Karal going awwwww, not even a little bit, but he was smiling foolishly as he retrieved some paper and highlighter pens from the desk. "Paper and pens as promised, and I think your shoes need to come off." He sat at the end of the bed and reached for one foot. "And I can start telling you the story while I do that."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] norglomofnit.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Taven took pens in one hand and paper in the other and squirmed while Karal took off his shoes. "Hurry please, Father."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
He laughed and hurried, hanging onto Taven's feet once his shoes were off. "All right. Well, once upon a time your mother and I were in the stables, innocently visiting Trenor," he leaned forward and deepened his voice, going for the dramatic, "with no knowledge of the evil beasts which had invaded the island."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] norglomofnit.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Taven's eyes went wide. "Dinosaurs!" he said in a loud whisper that was a mixture of fear and excitement.

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded. "Dinosaurs. They are huge lizards, bigger than a horse, with a great many very sharp teeth. The first I knew of them, Trenor was panicking and there was one already in the stable! I was very worried, but not your mother. She ran right at that dinosaur, and didn't hesitate even when more joined the first one."

"Did they eat her?" Taven asked worriedly.

Karal pulled a face and leaned forward, tapping Taven on the nose. "And what do you think? Do you think they ate her?"

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] norglomofnit.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Taven giggled. "Noooo," he said. "Mother is too good a fighter to get eaten by dinosaurs."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly." He nodded and grinned. "And that is exactly what she did. She picked one of those dinosaurs up by the tail and she swung it at the others, knocking them flying so Trenor and I could escape. We ran out of the stable as fast as we could and she was right behind us. Those dinosaurs learned that they should never pick a fight with your mother."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] norglomofnit.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Taven tilted his head back and cheered loudly. "YAAAAAAY!"

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Karal laughed and wriggled Taven's toes. "That was very much my reaction!" Whoever had created this had been incredibly talented, and Karal had to keep reminding himself that it wasn't real. "So there's no need to fear dinosaurs or anything else."

Re: simulation three -- bed time

[identity profile] norglomofnit.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
There was much giggling and squirming for the toe wiggling.

"I'm not afraid of anything!" Taven crowed proudly and thrust both hands into the air.

[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"I can see that!" Karal let go of Taven's feet and smiled down at him. "Do you think you could try and go to sleep now?" he asked, without much hope.
