Detention [13.10]

It was early but Harriet was looking bright and alert as she watched the students arrive. She had a cup of tea and a smile that might be just a little unnerving as she waited outside the Dangershop.

"Good morning, students. Your task is to rid the countryside of a marauding beast. I'm sure you'll all do a wonderful job. And Mr. Madrox? Just one of you today, thank you."

Name and why you're here. Harriet already knows, but declare it for posterity.

It's a lovely rolling field bordering a forest. All pretty typical countryside. There's a horse, all tacked up and ready to go, grazing in that field.

You're going to need him.

There's a few things you might want to watch out for in here.

What a treat! Steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash, or fish and chips for lumch, and spotted dick for dessert.

And tea, lots and lots of tea.

There's also some salads and soft drinks, because Harriet's not a monster.

Strangely, all the creatures have scarpered and it's perfectly quiet in the forest.

Return with a piece of the Jabberwocky to show you've dealt with it, and then you can leave.

Lee Adama, being a smartass.

The last time he'd been in detention, he'd been thrown into some barren wasteland and shot at with needles. so far, this seemed better.

Lee got geared up and made himself familiar with the horse.

Out of nowhere stepped an old man. "Got a good touch with the ponies I see. You're goin' to need that."

With the horse's reins in his hand, Lee padded into the forest, looking around for any needles or anything else projectile.

"Thanks," Lee said warily. "Hopefully won't need it too much."

"Gonna need this as well." The old man held out a large sword, one that was glowing slightly. "Got some advice for you, too, if you'll take it."

Oh great, a weapon. That meant this wouldn't just be an easy stroll through detention.

He took the sword and said, "Sure."

"Good lad." He slapped Lee on the back. "First off, the Jabberwocky's a tricksy beast. You want to watch out for its jaws - they bite - and its claws - they catch. Bloody thing can fly as well, and it's got a nasty temper. All you've got to do is use that there vorpal sword and chop off its head. It lairs up deep in the forest, but there's some things you want to watch out for on the way."

Nothing was ever easy.

"If you say watch out for needles, I quit," Lee said, trying to make his voice sound teasing.

"And leave the villagers all helpless and undefended?" The old man grinned and waved a hand at the completely villager-free landscape. "Nah, lad, no needles. Just the Jubjub bird, and the frumious bandersnatch. Beware the first, shun the other, keep an eye out for the slithy toves and you should be right. Oh, and there might be a borogrove or two about the place. They're not much of a danger, though. All they do is mope."

Lee had no idea what this guy was talking about but he really didn't want to hear any stories about them.

"I'll do that," he said with a nod. "Thanks for your help, sir."

"My job, lad, just doing my job." With another grin, the old man stepped back and waved him off. "Once you've slain the Jabberwock, you need to bring a bit of it back here. The head's traditional. Now off you go, into the forest."

No projectiles, but there was rustling in the bushes and a green pig creature stuck its head out and squealed.

It was followed by a bird, looking like nothing so much as a mop on very long legs, who started to approach Lee. It looked extremely ~~emo~~ depressed and made a wailing noise at him.

"Uh, hi?" Maybe they talked, right? He tightened his grip on the sword just in case.

The mop on legs sighed and ducked his head, then offered Lee a berry. The pig creature snorted in disgust and disappeared back into the bushes.

"I already ate but thanks," Lee said, trying to brush by the mop.

The mop sighed in a way that seemed to indicate this wasn't at all unexpected, because life was fundamentally unfair, and got out of the way so Lee could go past.

"You know what?" Lee didn't pass and held out his hand. Maybe something good would help down the road. "I'll take the berry. I didn't eat that much earlier."
