Combined Mathematics #6 [Friday 10-12, Period 4]

Jean-Paul was pacing again today. On the chalkboard were drawn two symbols, the multiplication symbol and the division symbol. It looked like a circle had been drawn around the X for multiplication, then erased. "My apologies for my absence last week, my player is a moron I had an unforeseen family emergency. In Canada. Luckily, the topic I had scheduled for last week and this week's topic dovetail quite nicely. Multiplication is simply adding the same number to itself x number of times. So five times four is five fours, or four fives, or, as I sincerely hope you all already know, twenty. Division is asking yourself 'how many times does this number fit into that number?' The rest of the information is handwavily in your texts. During class, I would like everyone to pair up and discuss ways that multiplication and division are useful in real life. On your way out the door, please pick up your worksheets and a review packet, because, yes, we will be having an exam when you get back from your break. Any questions?"

Naomi quietly took down notes.

As opposed to taking notes, Adah is working on multiplying the number of words the teacher has been saying by the amount of time he is taking to say them, and then dividing them by a number based on the pauses taken for breaths.

The numbers don't quite satisfy her like she thought they would, which explained her slight frown at her notebook.

Peter doodled ninjas fighting rabbits in his notebook.

Ronan looked around for a partner.

Charlie was looking vaguely lost when she sat down near Ronan. "Hey. So, aside from figuring out the interest on my bank account... I'm not thinking of anything."

Adah idly drew circles in the margin of her notebook, available if anyone wanted to pair up, but generally apathetic all around.

Peter had one idea in mind. "Rabbit breeding," he said to anyone who dared partner with him when he was in the kind of mood to use rabbit breeding as an example of multiplication.

Ronan had a piece of paper outlining his method all set up.

2+2=4
2 = 6/3
6/3 = 6(1/3)
1/3 = 0.333...
6(0.333...) = 1.999...

2+2 = 6(0.333...) + 6 (0.333...) = 1.999... + 1.999... = 3.999...

3.999... != 4

QED

[What's kinda sad is that I did this in my head without any kind of looking it up. I are math nerd.]

Peter wrote two sentences.

When you add two male rabbits and two female rabbits, you get a lot more than four rabbits.

Joke stolen from the internet.
