Shop, Period 5, Week 6

"Does everybody know what time it is?"

Oh, my. That was simply worng. Heidi the Tool Time announcer and tool-getter looked different. Taller, stockier, beardier, flannelier.

Tim bounded into the shop with the Tool Time intro playing. "All right, today we're going to learn about framing," he said, holding up a picture frame. "No, not this type of framing, this type," he said, whirling the frame off-~~stage~~set. Something broke. Tim walked the other way.

The workstations were set up with a collection of dimensional lumber cut to length, hammers, nails, tape measures, and most anything else one would need to put together a wall. "Now, for this project, you want to make sure the wood is sixteen inches on center to make a good solid wall that's even and easy to locate the studs, because you always want to find easy studs," he said with a chuckle and a laugh and a--he's hearing crickets again. And Al-In-A-Flannel-Bikini was holding up the Tool Time mailing address off in the corner.

"Today's project? Hang four walls, basic framing. For extra credit, frame in a door and a few windows." He showed how to frame in a door. Safely. And up to (most) codes.

"That's it for today! Have fun."

Take notes, giggle when he says "wood" or "stud" or anything else.

Handwave the framing or SP for extra special fun. Extra Credit possible.

Luke was combining the wall project with practical Jedi training, so he was only using his hands to hold up a portion of the wood and using his mind to keep the rest from falling on him.

If it helped distract him from the incredibly disturbing guy-in-the-flannel-bikini, so much the better.

Tim rubbed his eyes. Apparently, the eyebleach wasn't working, as he was seeing this kid work on a floating wall. It was together...but not attached. Huh. That's weird.

He looked around to see if anyone else noticed it--auuuugh! Al/Heidi flannel bikini again! He flailed a bit. He might have flailed a bit close to Luke's project.

"Careful!" Luke said, flinging his hands up as a plank came dangerously close to clonking his teacher on the head, and stopping its descent two inches above him.

Tim winced at the pain. It was so painful it didn't hurt. Huh. That was new. Maybe he was immune to pain? He looked at the plank. He made a noise that was ~~the final gruntsound in the theme song~~ a questionable grunty noise. "...what?"

"Welcome to Fandom," Luke said dryly, moving the unsecured wood into a neat stack.

"What did--did you just--what did--" He's flailing mentally and verbally. "How hard did I hit my head?"

"You didn't," Luke said, the "for once" unspoken but not necessarily unheard. "I moved the wood out of the way."

"How'ja move the wood from over there? I didn't even see you move?" Is there wires? He started checking for wires. "Did the program do something?" He checked the remote...which was batteryless since he dropped it and created the Al-Heidi.

Luke sighed. "Not exactly. I'm not from this planet."

"They keep mentioning that in the brochures and in the interview. Huh. So you're an alien? You don't look green." He thought it might be rude to ask why he's so tall and why his head wasn't bigger.

"I'm human," Luke said, "I'm just not from this galaxy."

"Oh. Well, that explains why your head is normal. What's it like in space? Are there space ships? Do they race 'em?" ~~Taggert~~ Tim asked, thinking about hot rod spaceship drag races. augh augh augh!

"In my part of space, yeah," Luke said carefully. "I'm a pilot back home. But it's mostly space combat--not recreation."

"So you don't have contests, like, see who can tow this moon the farthest, or who can make it through an asteroid field first?"

"...no," Luke said, looking at Tim like he was out of his mind. "Well, Beggar's Canyon back home, but that wasn't out in space."

"Huh," he said, his vision of intersteller tractor pulls winging away. "So you just have regular wheeled vehicles, like here, then. Hey, do you still have the Chevy big block in space?" His face went all hopeful.

"No, not at all," Luke said. "They're all hovercrafts. Or speeder bikes. Wheels get too much sand stuck in them."

"Hovercrafts, the big boat things with the rubber skirts? That's pretty nifty. I'd like to see one of them in person." He'd probably break part of it.

Luke stared. "No," he said slowly. "They're like cars, but without wheels. Everyone has them at home."

"That's good. I'd hate to see people without cars," he said, dreaming of the muscle cars he'd had.

Luke gave up trying to explain. "Right," he said with a vague smile.

"That's great! If they let you bring one on campus, bring it by. I'd love to see what's under the hood," he said, thinking of wheelless muscle cars.

Peter was done pretty quickly due to being able to one-hit the nails pretty efficiently. He decided to skimp on the door and windows, though, partially because it was more fun to break through the wall itself anyway.

Tim walked by and gave him a thumbs-up for his quick work.

And if he knew that Peter was planning on breaking through, he could offer some pointers.

Talk to Naomi once she's pinged in.

Naomi was there if she was needed.

Ask him ~~if he's 16" on center~~ questions.

Anyone want to be detented?
