Protect Yourself and Others: Week 6, Period 3

"Morning, everyone," Aly said with a smile to the class as they came into the room.  "I'm glad to see you're all recovered from the weekend.  Hopefully not too many of you drank the punch after too much of the dance had passed.  For any that did?  Bad, bad idea.  Know better next time."

"Today we're going to talk about security.  Which really should be obvious.  It's a class about protecting yourself and others.  And not all protection begins when someone is threatened.  Again, this seems a bit obvious, but it's forgotten about much of the time.  Especially if you are a skilled fighter and take the attitude of 'it doesn't matter if my house is protected, I can kick the ass of anyone who comes in.'  Sure, you might be able to.  And then again, you might not.  So why risk it?  Even more if there are others in the house or the building who might not have the same skills you do."  Aly shrugged.  "I know I fall prey to the same same hubris.  My apartment is never locked."  She smirked and added,  "which isn't an invitation."

She gave a quick but thorough lecture on the basics of home security and burglar alarms before delving off into techniques a bit more esoteric for the average home such as security cameras, magical detection triggers, wards, and folklore techniques like garlic and salt.

"So, what we're going to do today is have each of you take a floor plan for a home -  or pair up, I'm good with that too - and devise a security strategy for the home.  You can use high tech devices, the systems we discussed today, magic, whatever you like but just make sure there's a reason for it all and that you cover as many eventualities as possible."  Aly glanced over the class to make sure the students were following.  "Once you have you design done, try to pair up and discuss what you chose and why.  And if all this is even necessary."

"Before I let you all go off to your projects, let me say one thing.  We're not going to have class again until after Parents' Weekend.  Which means for some of you I'll see your parents, siblings, guardians, employers, friends, whomever before I see you again.  So if there's anything you're concerned about?  Feel free to come talk to me after class or find me in the next week or so."  She grinned.  "I know what it's like.  My mother was here all last year, and we both managed to survive.  You'll survive the weekend."

"That being said?  Have a great break, don't blow up the school unless you let me check out the explosives first."

Of course, Chad is taking his usual notes. Notes are important.

Seely paid even closer attention than usual today.

Bridge? Taking notes like a crazy note-taking thing. Even though a typical "home invasion" where he's from consists of "house has been stomped on/knocked down by a monster", he figures this is very good stuff to know. Just in case.

Adam was all about the notes today. Especially with the constant invasions from alien creatures wishing to take over the world, omg.

It was interesting to think about alarm systems and video monitors for their actual purpose instead of how to get around them, Dean thought, taking notes on that part of the lecture especially.

Things like saltlines he felt he was pretty much on top of already.

Peter took plenty of notes. He'd probably need a Spider-Cave of something someday.

Z was taking notes, along the lines of 'that never works' and 'ew, those suck.' Though breaking and entering hadn't been her and Jack's usual modus operandi, she knew the basics.

Molly felt like she'd been slacking off in Aly's class lately so she paid extra careful attention today and took lots of notes.

Inara took very careful and thorough notes. She wasn't sure she'd have much use for the material once she returned to Shinon, but it was about protection instead of aggression, which she appreciated.

Sokka took very careful, thorough notes.

Eve sat off to one side, looking up floor plans and getting entirely too into it.

A partner would totally be welcomed.

Peter got to work on the weetiny apartment plan. It was fairly straightforward - strategically placed cameras, keypad entry, line of salt built in underneath the door, blah blah blah.

No, the fun part was three webshooters built into the angled wall by the entrance, firing at three different angles if a special trigger on the doorknob wasn't depressed.

Peter liked sticking to the web theme.

Molly quickly made a plan for the one bedroom apartment using normal, modern security devices with a few simple magic protections added in.

But, that was quickly done and she started on another plan for a large house. The first thing she added was a moat. She was debating sharks versus alligators and really wouldn't mind a second opinion.

Inara started working on a one bedroom apartment, although she did start wondering what would be necessary to keep a spaceship safe.

Sokka took the three-bedroom apartment plan and started marking it up with basic burglar alarms and some magical protection.

THEN he started adding on stuff that sounded like something he might have seen on TV, like hidden laser guns, trap doors to piranha-filled pools, ultra-reinforced plastisteel blast doors, a robot with laser-beam eyes, a self-destruct mechanism, etc., etc., etc.

But all that was just window dressing.

For the REAL security system, he circled the bed in bedroom #2 and wrote, in big letters, "DEADPOOL SLEEPS HERE".

Z did a plan for the one bedroom apartment that involved laser motion detectors, cameras, and the like.

Then she did a second plan for the one bedroom apartment by simply scrawling, "Don't have anything worth stealing, that usually works," across a printout.

Dean was there and would happily offer advice on salt lines, cats eyes shells, devil's traps and other esoteric securities.
