The Danger Room today was set up to look like someone's basement. A BIG basement, but a basement nonetheless. Scattered about the room were several folding tables of various shapes and sizes, each of which had a person dressed in a tuxedo sitting at it. The room smelled vaguely of whiskey and cigarettes, although neither was actually present.
"So," Squall said, tossing out the sign-in clipboard. "Who here watches the Travel Channel?" He looked around for hands. "ESPN2?" Another pause. "Okay, more to the point. Who doesn't know what we're doing here?"
He grinned. "All right, kids, the name of the game is No-limit Texas Hold 'Em." He pulled a deck of cards out of his pocket and started shuffling them. "Which is, for those of you from different worlds, a variant of poker. Which is gambling. Anyone who has a moral or religious objection to gambling is free to leave without any penalties, except for detention this weekend. This is a valuable and important skill to have, so pay attention."
Squall went on to talk about the rankings of the various poker hands, and the basic mechanics of the game of hold 'em, including betting, bluffing, and the like.
"All right," he finished. "Each of you gets 250 gil worth of chips. Whites are worth 1, reds are 5, and blues are 10. You can also pick up a reference card with the hand rankings on it, but if you need to look at it, you'll probably lose. Grab a table and any number of other players, and have at it."
