Library [10/01]

The library was occupied far earlier than usual this morning as Sam headed inside and immediately went to the shelves. He'd woken up with all of his old memories, along with his memories from the weekend, and while the later memories made waking up in bed with Peter slightly less confusing, it didn't make the situation any less awkward or embarrassing. He was pretty sure that he'd managed to slip out of bed, get dressed, and get out of his room without waking Peter up, and even though he felt bad about just leaving Peter there, he was pretty sure that they both would have felt worse if he'd stuck around.

Sam didn't know where Dawn was, or what he'd say to her when he saw her, but for now, he was focusing on a good, long distraction. It seemed that a large number of books had gotten knocked down by someone very tall and floppy-haired. Sam was going to have to stay hidden in the shelves all day to make sure that the books were back in order. What a shame.

Sam was in the mysteries section, making sure that the Casey Millhouse novels were back in alphabetical order.

Then came the psychology section, where Sam was totally putting journal collections in chronological order, and not looking at anything about temporary memory loss. Really.

The library was closed while Sam was in Religion class, unless another library worker was around.

The library was closed for lunch, to everyone except Thursday and the aides.

Heading back to the shelves as soon as lunch was over, Sam debated whether to put certain series' on the shelves in alphabetical, chronological, or published order.

Sam took a very slow sweep through the library before he had to close up.

I'm not going to be home until 7pm Eastern (stupid school, stupid meetings), but please feel free to tag people in for SP. :D

Peter came into the library and looked around for Sam.

That he had picked fourth period, when he would absolutely have to leave at the end of it in order to get to his next class and therefore an escape route from any awkward conversations... well bonus.

While Sam was in class, Dawn left a note in an envelope on the desk. He could read it when he got back.

Yeah, it was cowardly, but she wasn't ready to talk to him yet, if ever.

A few minutes later, she came back and grabbed the envelope off the desk, then left.

Sam came out from behind one of the shelves with a pair of books, and stopped short when he realized he wasn't alone. "Um. Hey," he said lamely, before glancing down. Having something in his hands to focus on was a bit of a blessing.

"Hey," Peter said. Oh look: by sheer coincidence having long bangs that hid your eyes meant you could focus on something else too.

"How are you doing?" Sam asked, sneaking a quick glance at Peter.

"I remember who I am," Peter said. He tried sneaking a quick glance at Sam, only this turned out to be when Sam snuck a quick glance at him, so Peter leapt rather eagerly onto plan B, which was sneaking a glance at something about four feet over Sam's head. "Uh - you?"

After catching Peter's glance, Sam looked back down at the books, turning them over in his hands. "Yeah, I remember myself now. I remember everything."

"How's Dawn?" Peter asked, since that seemed like a good way to keep the conversation on the right track.

"Okay, I think. I haven't really talked to her yet," he admitted. "But she seemed okay yesterday. Like, not hurt or anything."

"That's good," Peter said. Hey look, floor. Fascinating. "I'm glad."

"Me too. Have you bumped into anyone else?" Sam asked. "I had class last period, and it seems like lots of people got hit with whatever this was."

"Yeah, radio was a trip to listen to," Peter said. Then felt really stupid as he remembered what Sam had done Saturday night.

"Doing the radio broadcast was interesting," Sam said lightly. "I think I still have bruises on my ankles from the damn squirrels though."

Which got Peter remembering marks he was currently sporting that were most certainly not caused by squirrels.

So this would be Peter blushing, and finding something over his shoulder to be very interesting. Aaaaaaaand not asking himself why he didn't use his borrowed healing ability to make those go away.

"Uh - " conversation, it'd be there somewhere. Topic... "Well if it's not one thing it's another, huh?

Sam nodded, unsure of what to say. He hated feeling this uncomfortable around Peter, but he wasn't sure how to make it go away. "Around here, it's always something. I'm just glad it went away."

"Oh yeah," Peter said. "Me too."

Then, because he was not going to let some Fandom weirdness take away his best friend, Peter finally tried to look Sam in the eyes. "I'm glad things are back to normal."

It took a moment, but Sam was able to look at Peter as well. "Me too. As normal as things ever get around here, of course."

Peter started to smile. "Good. Great. I'm glad."

"And if things are back to normal...you and I are okay, right?" Sam asked, unable to keep from sounding a little hopeful. "I'm sorry about just leaving this morning, but I didn't know what else to do."

"No, no, totally fine," Peter said. "You did fine. We're fine. Still friends?"

Peter held his hand out for Sam to shake.

"Oh, yeah, of course," Sam said, taking Peter's hand.

"I'm glad," Peter said, and meant it. He gave Sam's hand a squeeze while shaking it. "Our friendship's worth more than anything Fandom can throw at us, right?"

"Absolutely," Sam said. That didn't even require thinking about it. "You're my best friend. It'll take a lot more than memory loss to mess with that."

"Good." Peter went to take his hand back. "Guess I should get back to class."

"Yeah," Sam said, finally letting go. "I should probably get back to work. I've got a lot of books to sort today."

"Catch you later?" Peter said.

"Yeah, definitely," Sam answered.

Peter thought about giving Sam a pat on the shoulder, totally overthought it, and tried to cover the move by pushing his hair out of his eyes. He then settled for waving and heading out the door.

Sam waved back, and waited until Peter was out the door before hitting himself in the head with the heavier book a few times.
