Popular Culture [Thursday, September 27, 4th Period]

"Let's talk about technology. Seein' as Fandom has a diverse student body given some of you are from the past, future and alternate realities. But we can't really go into the hows and wherefores for that you have to go to the brainy tech types like Anakin." She paused, "Or d'you all call him Professor Skywalker?"

Rose shook her head, "Anyway, we're all going to start with the primitive and work our way up to the technology we have today but first let's find out exactly how many of the handy things we have you're all familiar with."

"There's television, which I'm certain you lot have seen before. In fact I'd be shocked if you haven't by this point. In fact the reason why I brought the telly out first is because its easily the most recognizable technology you can get your hands on. So, you're assignment for next week is to watch as much telly as you can."

Rose looked at them, eyes sparkling, "Yes, that's right, I'm askin' each of you to take time and watch. By next class I want all of you to come back here and list down your favourite shows and why. But before all of you get fired up with excitement let's concentrate on today's class shall we?

"Technology, easy word we bandy about now and again but just like beauty, technology is relative. What seems modern to us may seem futuristic or primitive to others. But like it or not whatever technology we have on hand also makes up a good portion of our current culture, like say the telly." She patted the TV. "Can't deny that roughly more than half of today's culture is influenced by television, MTVs, popular shows and etc. I could go on about it but that's for the next class."

"Question: What's the most influential piece of tech you have at home? How do you think that influences the culture of your time?"

"For Show and Tell, we have Chad ~~if he's here~~ displayin' his marvelous coat, I'm sure he has a lot of stories regarding that jacket, feel free to poke, prod and question Chad about it."

It was some pretty interesting eye make up, but Chad was a good student and took notes.

His homework was... to watch television?

Oh, his father would hate that.

Which meant, of course, that Blackheart was going to be quite the couch potato this week.

"What's the most influential piece of tech you have at home? How do you think that influences the culture of your time?"

He may have been really biased toward this answered, but when Chad raised his hand, he answered with CD player. "Or anything that could play recorded music. Music captures so much about culture, and so technology that makes you, like, able to listen to more of it is pretty...cool."

Rose nodded, "Music is influential, fact I think through time that's one of the consistent things that influenced culture."

Chad nodded. "'Zactly why it's so important to have ways to keep passin' it on, you know?"

"Fire." Blackheart's expression was perfectly serious. "Whoever controls the fire has the power. And hellfire and metal react together in... interesting ways, sometimes. One doesn't need cars or televisions if they've got it."

And besides, what civilization out there didn't rely on fire somehow?

"Fire?" Rose repeated, amused, "That's a bit unconventional but still true. Fire did start civilization after all, points, Blackie."

Yes, she said that on purpose.

....

"Blackie?"

"Yeah?" She asked.

Blackheart stared at her incredulously.

"But... why 'Blackie?'"

"You prefer I call you Heartie instead?"

He considered this for a moment.

"As in mutilated blood-covered human hearts, or little pink holiday hearts?"

This was a very important distinction.

"Little pink holiday hearts with wings" Rose said, enunciating each word. "Frankly, I think Blackie's more distinctive, kinda like a pirate."

Oh, Blackheart hated her.

"Far more distinctive," he agreed with a scowl. "Quite like a pirate. Dangerous."

...

Oh, his pride.

Rose flashed him a wide, wide grin. "Blackie it is then."

He was not sitting there in his seat with his arms crossed, resigned to snarling grumpily.

Honest.

"Since your so very sociable," Rose said, suppressing another smile. "What say you to a spot of show and tell next class? Go on, you can go show off fire and brimstone and whatnot."

"It would be a pleasure."

Though he didn't sound terribly thrilled about it at all, really.

"There you go, then blackie my lad," Rose said and patted his shoulders. "I'm sure you'll come up with something devilish."

Faile didn't think her world was primitive, but the reliance on 'magic' really did make it sound that way. "Iron working, I guess," she said. "It lets us make better weapons and stronger structures."

"Iron working, yeah, just like fire we won't be anywhere without 'em." Rose said. "Before you run, you've to learn to walk."

"I'd say it's television back home as well." Robin nodded.

"Television," Rose said and leaned forward, "and really big hair."

Yes, that really stuck with Rose when she last visited that era.

Robin giggled. "And sholder pads. Don't forget the shoulder pads."

"And the eye shadow!"

Robin was helpless with giggles now. "And the hats!"

Rose laughed, "Oh, God and the big chunky cellphones!"

"That's right, they're really small now aren't they. How do people not lose them?"

"Its easier to slip in our pockets," she looked at Robin and his lack of pants, "or, er bags."

"Hmm, good point." he nodded. "But watching tv on them, what's the point? How can you make anything out on such a teeny screen?"

"I guess the TV is the most influential technology back home," Liz said after a few minutes as she considered what to say.

"Not a surprise, since I think your time's quite close to this year, yeah?" Rose agreed. "I think movies would do too, don't you think?"

Chad had been practising this all last ~~two~~ weeks, and it had been a while since he really performed in front of people, and ages since he performed by himself, so he was a little bit nervous. He shrugged on the red mariachi jacket that Senor El had given him ages ago, strung his guitar strap over his head and settled it into place. He plucked a few warm-up strings before explaining his piece.

"See, um, some of you know this, some of you don't, but I'm actually half Mexican, half Japanese, and, before I lived here, in the States, I've lived in both Mexico and Japan, and so both of 'em have had a lot of cultural impact in my life. What I'm going to play is based on traditional mariachi music from Mexico, but I tried to sort of meld it in with classical Japanese music, too. So it's...interesting? I don't know if it's any good, but it is at least interesting. I guess?"

And this is why Chad didn't talk much. "...I...I'll just play now."

And that he did.

Robin cheered.

Rose smiled encouragingly, "Go on, Chad, we'd be happy to hear what you've got."

Rose is packing up the telly.
