Career Choices - period 4 - week 4 - wednesday

Emma was in diamond shape today, and she was holding a pickaxe. "Today you are going to explore the exciting world of mining. More precisely, gold mining." She nodded towards the pile of equipment in the corner. "Make sure to wear hard hats and grab what you think you'll need." She paused. "No matter what happens the Danger Room will not let you get truly harmed."

Cassandra examined the explosives critically. She knew how to use them, but she didn't have any idea what she was supposed to actually be doing. Blowing big chunks of rock up didn't seem to be quite what the lesson entailed.

River didn't really like caves. And a sign pointing towards gold should not be trusted.

Cassandra frowned at the rocks illuminated weakly by the flashlight she grabbed. Based on previous experience, she knew that she could make her way through approximately 2 linear feet of collapsed rock an hour. Somehow she doubted that she had enough air for that to be a workable plan.

So she started digging. Workable or not, it seemed the only option.

River heard the scratching sound of digging on the other side of the rock slide. She started digging too, trying to capture a rhythm that in morse code spelt out: Assistance is on the way.

While words weren't really Cassandra's thing, movement and its rhythms were something she understood. She changed her pace slightly, matching with the sounds from the other side as a sort of acknowledgment of message received.

As she got the same message back, River assumed the message had been acknowledged but not understood. Nevertheless, she dug Explosives? back, hoping to get permission.

It took Cassandra more time to unravel that one, and still more time to make a decision. On the one hand, she had no idea who was out there offering explosives. On the other hand... based on how faint the digging sounds are, she didn't have enough air for something else.

She dug just enough to send back permission before backing up and tucking herself into a corner. No point in getting blown up during a rescue attempt, after all.

River had taken Aly's class after all, so she was quite familiar with explosives by now. She estimated the thickness of the layer of pebbles from the sound of the digging and lit the fuse.

BOOM!

Explosions in tight spaces were never precisely pleasant, but this one could have been a lot worse. For one thing, it could have not worked. As it stood, the wall of rock blocking Cassandra in was blown back, and as the bottom slid away the top came down opening a space to crawl through.

Cassandra stuck her face near the hole and called through to ensure it was clear, "Did it work?"

Of course he wouldn't get any powers that involve energy projection to get out of there. That would just be too easy.

It just had to be sand.

"Damn." Well, he was screwed.

"I'm coming!" Sulley yelled, then winced, hoping he hadn't made anything cave in further. He started digging with his bare hands, pulling away rocks and grabbing at sand.

Well, this was annoying. Will couldn't actually see anything behind the boulders she could feel. They were much too big for her to push anywhere, she she worried that using the Heart to push them out of the way might cause other things to fall on top of her.

So she kept put for the moment, and tried not to think about the several tons of solid rock surrounded her on almost all sides.
