Art 101, Period 4, Class 4 (Monday 9-24)

Steve was standing at the front of the art room and smiling as the students entered. "I hope everyone did their homework? Good." He gestured to a clothesline strung across the back wall. "If you'll please clip your work up before you sit down? And if you'd like to put up the work you did in class last week, too, that would be great."

The rest of the room was set up as it had been the week before, with drawing stations (one large enough for Sulley, of course) and sketch pads. However, instead of crayons and pastels, this week there were pencils: colored pencils, charcoal pencils of various degrees of hardness, and good old-fashioned orange #2 pencils. Steve was a traditionalist, what could he say? There was also a pencil sharpener and an eraser at each station. And at the front of the room, on a small table, was a bowl of fruit--grapes, pears, bananas, an an apple or two. Steve indicated the bowl. "Your subject," he told the class. "This is what we call a 'still life,' meaning nothing in the drawing or painting is alive. This is what you're going to draw today, whether in black and white or in color is your choice. And then your homework--yes, you're going to regularly have homework in this class, because I think art once a week is not enough art, but then this is what I love so maybe you disagree, I'm sorry--but anyway. Your homework is to assemble a still life of your own and draw it. You can use pencils or the crayons or pastels from last week, it's up to you. Any questions?"

"You know," Naminé observed with a smile. "There's something very postmodern about your take on this assignment."

"You should see me draw cans of soup," Jamie said bouncing around somewhat in his seat and looking quite hyper. "I'm like... awesome at that."

Naminé laughed. "Shall we call you Warhol, then? Are you reinventing the whole idea of an art class?"

"I'm just trying to say that Sears building can just be as beautiful as a landscape," Jamie replied. "And I don't need a giant afro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ross) and be strung out on ludes to do it.

"I see," Naminé said with a nod. "Very daring. Perhaps our participation in this class is art. We are ironically attempting to create, when we are the created and the creation all at once. Next week, perhaps you should dress as a paintbrush to illustrate the point."

"Or perhaps we should study the human form and all come naked," Jamie suggested as he took a gulp of Red Bull.

"I think traditionally they get one person to be nude, so it isn't quite so distracting," she laughed. "How kind of you to offer your services, by the way. I'm certain our teacher is grateful."

"He didn't seem that grateful," Jamie said as he finished his can of red bull and popped open another. "In fact he told me I'd get detention if I did show up nude. Maybe I should come shirtless. Would that be acceptable?"

"Technically speaking, any item of clothing would make it so that you were not nude," Naminé said lightly. "A hat, a sock, a tiny bathing suit. None of those would leave the wearer nude. And really, what is more important? Detention, or our progress as artists?"

"Hmmm. That has possibilities," Jamie said rubbing his chin. "And far be it from me to hinder artistic progress."

"Truly, you're too kind," she laughed. "A benefactor to the arts. We should name an art school after you. Or possibly a new movement."

"Please!" Jamie said holding up his hands in a humble gesture. "I'm just a simple artist plying my trade. Cash would be just fine."

"Mmmmm. There's the rub, isn't it?" she smiled. "The term 'starving artist' is only too apt, I'm afraid. I don't suppose there's anyone here with spare cash on hand."

"Maybe you'd like to pay for an empty Red Bull can with my name signed on it?"

"Interesting piece," she mused. "Signed by the artist himself, so it's sure to go up in value. More so should something terrible happen to you. No offense intended, of course, it's a sad truth of art."
