Lunch - Friday 9/21

Das Schnitzel was the one out in the cafeteria today and she didn't look particularly happy. The Chef had gone on a cake baking frenzy last night and he was still going at it. So guess what was for lunch today?

Today's Menu:

-German chocolate cake

-Carrot cake

-A birthday cake that said "Happy Birthday Floyd!" for some reason

-Chocolate cake with peanut butter icing

Who could pass up chocolate cake with peanut butter icing? Not Hoshi!

Oh, look! A Hoshi! After a moment a careful planning, Turtle, like a tiger on the prowl, picked up her tray to pounce. Well, not pounce so much as just relocate. Hoshi was, after all, in her class.

"Hi, Hoshi!" she greeted the other girl brightly. "Mind some company?"

"No, go ahead," said Hoshi, waving at the empty seat at her table.

"Thanks!" Turtle smiled brightly and then hopped down into the seat across from Hoshi. "How's things at the hotel?"

"Not bad," said Hoshi. "I get to earn money, cook and practice my German at the same time. How are things at Turtle and Canary?"

Turtle's nose wrinkled with a slight frown as she stabbed into Floyd's birthday cake. "In truth, not the best. I'm having...issues regarding the company that provides the Squishy flavors, but they're getting worked out."

"That's too bad. I hope they get that fixed," said Hoshi.

"Believe me," Turtle's eyes widened, boggling a little at a piece of case before it disappeared into her mouth. "Me, too. They had me on hold for almost three hours yesterday. The most unproductive day I've ever had at work. That kind of poor service is just appalling, don't you think?"

"Just awful," agreed Hoshi. "That's probably why they're no longer in business in my century."

Turtle laughed a little at that; she couldn't help it. "That's very comforting," she explained, "when businesses that don't work well don't do well. But, I mean, aren't all businesses pretty much out of business in your century, because there's no currency or even really any capitalism?"

That was much bleaker for Turtle to think about.

"Well, going through a third world war sort of put a lot of people out of business," explained Hoshi. "But in my time they are starting to establish interplanetary trade so capitalism still exists, even if we're not using money to trade."

"So it's more of a barter system?" Turtle asked, going to see what it tasted like to try the German chocolate with the carrot on one fork.

"I guess so," said Hoshi. Economics was not her strongest subject. "But the acquisition of wealth and possessions is not as much a driving force as it is in this time period."

Not as much, Hoshi said, which tilted Turtle's head because it suggested that maybe there still was some, which made Turtle feel better, but she didn't say anything. She had to be careful and not say anything that made her sound too focused on stuff like that. No one wanted a representative like that. She wondered as she had some more cake if it would be too much to pull out that topic at the moment. Maybe a bit.

"How're your classes?" she asked, instead.

"They're weird," said Hoshi. "I've got Keeping Your Wits and Communication, which aren't bad. Then I have Fandom's Next Top Model which is absolutely bizarre. I've also got Love Smart, which is a bit more tolerable now that I'm the TA."

Turtle smirked a little. "What did you expect with something called Fandom's Next Top Model? Or was it a paperwork error?"

"It has to be a paperwork error, just like the same error where they forgot to tell me what year this school is in," groaned Hoshi.

[Off to my last day at work! Will pick up pings later.]

Turtle offered Hoshi a very sympathetic smile. "Yeah, that happens a lot here. Maybe that's something I can work toward fixing if I get into Student Council."

Turtle blinked. Oh, crap. It slipped! Better work with it. She smiled again at Hoshi.

"You want to be on student council? Can they fix things like that?" asked Hoshi.

"If I get in?" Turtle said, leaning forward importantly. "I'm sure as heck going to try."

"How do you get on the student council?" asked Hoshi. She had seen the fliers but hadn't really paid attention.

"You get voted in by your classmates." Hint, hint. Turtle smiled eagerly at Hoshi, batting her eyes.

"I'll vote for you, then," said Hoshi. "Anything else I can do to help you out?"

"Yay!" Turtle bounced a little, happily clapping her hands together. "Thank you so much, Hoshi! Really! I promise that I won't let you down. And, if you'd like to help, you can just kind of maybe spread the word a bit on how you think I'll be an amazing representative, because, believe me, I will be."

Hey, Carrot Cake was totally healthy. It had vegetables in it. And so the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing was desert. Besides it was Friday.
