Popular Culture [Thursday, September 13]

Rose grabbed a chalk and wrote: 'Culture'.

"A lot of you stem from different cultures whether its because you're from another world, dimension or time I bet no one thing about your culture is alike. In this class we're not just going to learn about this world's culture I very much encourage everyone to share one or two favorite things you have in your culture. So, once in a while we're gonna do some show and tell. I'm goin' to assign one person per week to do this."

Rose nodded to Robin ~~if he's in~~, "Later on, Robin will be sharing a video about his uncle."

"First thing though, what's culture?" Rose passed out handouts, "As you can see, culture, it's been defined as 'a way of life for an entire society'. It can be from manner of dress, language, rituals, morality and system of belief. This bein' *Popular* Culture we're here to learn the moralities, systems of belief and etc., of this century. Particularly the culture the last few decades.

"Everything changes in this era, in fact in just a few years after world war II humanity has once again made a technological leap from merely lookin' at the stars to venturing to the moon. Heck, you've seen evidence that humanity," Rose looked at Robin, "Er, I mean, Earthlings can advance to greater lengths but enough about that."

"What, for you, defines culture?"

"And for Next week's show an' tell victim is for now I'm just goin' to go on volunteerism, third week however will not be so voluntary, so anyone brave enough for it please see me after class."

"I think culture is a person's background," Liz said, "their nationality, beliefs, way of life,"

"Good answer," Rose said with an approving nod, "we're all shaped by the things you said. But what do you think informs us first our background or what society dictates our actions to be?"

"I think the definition you gave sums it up pretty good," Chad observed after an oh-so-thoughtful moment.

"How do you think so-called sub-cultures come about if we already have a set culture?" Rose inquired.

Chad considered the question long enough that it might have seemed like he wasn't paying attention, but then he spoke. "'Cause they get bored," he said, "or they mix with other cultures, and so they change."

The silence had gone longer than Rose had suspected that at first she thought Chad hadn't heard her.

"That's it, isn't it?" Rose said, "one thing we're told that's always constant is change. Have you any experience about subcultures? Even if you're just in the sidelines?"

That got a small smile out of Chad, barely there unless you paid attention. "My dad was Japanese," he said, "and mi madre was Mexican, and I've lived in both places, so, yeah, I'd say I've experienced a couple, 'specially with my parents' friends who all knew each other."

"Oh, that's interesting!" Rose said enthusiastically, "you might even say you have the best of both worlds!
Was there any difference between Mexican and Japanese culture you perceived?"

"Big difference," Chad said (no pun intended). "Fit in better in Mexico 'cause of my looks, but Japan's nice, too." His smile increased a little. He didn't get to talk about himself like this often, but he always liked it.

Rose saw the smile, she liked it when students smiled.

"I bet you stand out in Japan, huh? The last time I was there... we really stood out." Of course that would have to be because she'd gone there during the 17th century but hey.

Heh, stand out. See, he got it. "Yeah," he said. "Not too bad, though. That I'm quiet helped."

Rose nodded, "Yeah, that helps a *lot*. Were there any cultural differences you found took sometime to get used too?"

"Everything," Chad said after a moment, "is just really small in Japan. And the food is better, but you have to eat more of it."

Rose laughed, "Yeah, pretty much what I observed when I visited. I loved their food."

"So good," Chad said, hand on stomach and trying not too look toward the clock to see if it was close to food time. "Mi padre was really good at making Jap-Mex food. Really weird stuff, but good."

"Ooh," Rose said, perking-up, "I'd love to taste that," then an idea struck her, "would you like to volunteer for the next Show and Tell class?"

"Show and tell?" Chad's head tilted a little, blinking. "Yeah." He nodded. "I would." That mariachi jacket had been collecting a lot of dust lately, after all, and he missed performing a lot. He gave a small smile. "Next class, huh?"

Rose nodded, "Yep, next class bring anything you feel you'd like to share pertaining to your culture."

Watch and be awed! (Pls. wait for Robin to ping in first)

Bouncing excitedly, Robin came up to the front for his presentation. "There's a lot I'd love to share with you, but I know we don't have all day. And I hear he's working on another series too. And, also, if I could, I've closed it off with a clip from one of his earliest productions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TEFWTTztHI), a version of ~~The Frog Prince~~ The Princely Frog, uhm, starring me. When I was only about 5 years old. As some of you might know, the performing thing kinda stuck."

"So you and your uncle have been doin' this a long time now, yeah?"

"Oh yeah I got to help out on his variety show and was a PA for his movies. But he's been at it since before I was born."

"Seeing that you and your uncle are celebrities, I'm bettin' your life is quite different to some people?"

"Well I don't know about me. He's a celebrity though, and I've met quite a few. Although, now that I think of it, I think I did get some fan mail back when I was little. One or two I think. Mostly I was in the background though."

"Guess you didn't get the scary stalker fans," she said with a teasing smile.

"No the only stalker I ever saw was my Uncle's girl friend, and I wasn't on her list." Robin giggled.

Rose chuckled, "Yeah, persistent suitors could be a probably! You seem to enjoy what you're doing, any plans of joining a drama club or something similar?"

"If there is one, I'll join all right." he bounced. "I was in the school play over the summer, and it was sooooooooooo much fun!"

Robin could really give the Doctor points for enthusiasm.

"And don't forget to invite me to your productions, all right?"

"I won't." he promised.

Rose is humming a tune.
