15 Ways to Protect Yourself and Others - Period 3, Week 2

Aly sat on her desk as she watched her students file into the room.  Start of the term was always fun especially with these students.  She waited until everyone had found a seat or at least a comfortable place to lean and began.

"What we need," she said.  "Is a baseline that we can start with.  So what I want from you today is to pair up and discuss your own experiences." She paused.  "Your own or something you've seen done, a time someone tried to protect you.  I don't want this to be an exercise in emo or browbeating so while I'm sure none of you would take it that way, let me just have said it."

"This can be anything.  It doesn't have to be a life and death situation. You can have tried to protect your sister from dating the guy you didn't like."  Aly grinned.  "I'm a little sister though.  Trust me when I say that never works."

"But what I'd like you to do is talk about what works in your experience.  What doesn't.  Is the hardest thing protecting someone from themselves?"  Aly shifted on the desk slightly, her hand reaching to stroke the black beads at her throat.  "Most of you know I'm bored by theory.  So this is going to be our 'theoretical class.'  Next week we'll get into practicalities now that this is out of the way."

"And by the way, just so you know if I'm not around or you can't find me, Zuko and Dean Winchester are your TAs.  Be nice to them."

[OOC:  I am SO SORRY for the lateness/lameness of the class.  I kinda forgot today was Tuesday.  *cough*  Great omen for the semester, yes.  OCD is a'coming.   Up! ]

"Sounds good to me. You already know the truth about my past, so it's less of a big deal for me to tell you stuff."

"Yeah, that's true," Adam nodded, smiling lightly. "And well, you sort of know about mine, so I suppose it counts for something."

"Okay so, want to start with the first time we protected someone?"

"Sure," Adam thought back to all the times he'd protected someone. "My friends Rocky, Aisha and I were visiting Angel Grove Park when our teacher's son started rolling down the hill in his carriage, headed for the water. We managed to stop the carriage at the last second."

"Dude that's awesome." Billy grinned. "I uh, well the first time I can think that I actually 'protected' someone, was uhm, not revealing the people who recruited me to kill my father. But I didn't know he was my father at the time." he added hastily.

"Hey, that was brave of you to do," Adam meant it. "Especially if it meant you getting hurt for withholding that information."

"It worked out for the best, in that it's how I got to be trained by my first sensei. I impressed him with my honor, so he sprung me."

"It always seems to work out for the best, doesn't it?" Adam smiled, happy to hear that.

"Though it usually doesn't seem like it at the time."

"No, it usually never does," Adam chuckled.

"So, when's another time you protected someone?"

Adam wondered how much he could say about his other way of protecting people. He figured he could trust Billy with this information. "There were constant monster attacks back home. I fought those things almost everyday, especially when they went after kids that I taught martial arts to and coached in soccer," he explained. "What about you?"

"I helped the military against my father's organization, but I also protected him once, I made a decision not to turn him in. Not sure how well that one worked out though."
