Aly sat on her desk as she watched her students file into the room. Start of the term was always fun especially with these students. She waited until everyone had found a seat or at least a comfortable place to lean and began.

"What we need," she said. "Is a baseline that we can start with. So what I want from you today is to pair up and discuss your own experiences." She paused. "Your own or something you've seen done, a time someone tried to protect you. I don't want this to be an exercise in emo or browbeating so while I'm sure none of you would take it that way, let me just have said it."

"This can be anything. It doesn't have to be a life and death situation. You can have tried to protect your sister from dating the guy you didn't like." Aly grinned. "I'm a little sister though. Trust me when I say that never works."

"But what I'd like you to do is talk about what works in your experience. What doesn't. Is the hardest thing protecting someone from themselves?" Aly shifted on the desk slightly, her hand reaching to stroke the black beads at her throat. "Most of you know I'm bored by theory. So this is going to be our 'theoretical class.' Next week we'll get into practicalities now that this is out of the way."

"And by the way, just so you know if I'm not around or you can't find me, Zuko and Dean Winchester are your TAs. Be nice to them."

[OOC: I am SO SORRY for the lateness/lameness of the class. I kinda forgot today was Tuesday. *cough* Great omen for the semester, yes. OCD is ~~a'coming.~~ Up! ]

Chad was sitting there making a list of people he'd protected in his head and frowning at how small it was as he waited for someone to partner up with.

"You look like a protect-y kind of guy," Sokka said cheerfully. "I'll bet you've protected almost as many people as I have. No need to be jealous."

Chad looked down and arched an eyebrow at his roommate's little brother, making a note to verify anything Sokka said with Katara first before believing any of it. "How many you got?"

"A few villages' worth," Sokka announced proudly. "Maybe more. And that's only if you DON'T count all of Ba Sing Se." He gave Chad a very pleased-with-himself smile and stretched. "Yep, I've protected a LOT of people."

Chad scratched his nose a little; that was pretty impressive. "Has your sister saved that many?" he aksed, head tilting slightly.

"Yeeeeaaah," Sokka said slowly. "She was there. She helped."

Granted, she had done a lot more of the actual work than he had, but he usually came up with the plans! Usually. Sometimes. Not the point! He was trying to impress Chad.

The corner of Chad's mouth went up in a small grin. Yeah, that was pretty much the answer he expected.

"Most of my saving has been done in groups," he noted. "Y'don't think that makes it any less impressive, do you?"

Sokka shrugged. "All of my saving's been done in groups. We call it 'teamwork'."

"I've had..." Chad stopped midsentence, head tilting. No, wait, that hadn't been solo, either, because Ichigo's sister had to tell him where the Hollow was because he couldn't see it, but she could. So maybe...

"Jude!" Chad said suddenly. "I did save Jude by myself. That's one."

"Good for you." Sokka gave him a condescending pat on the shoulder. "I'm very proud of you."

"It was against the trolls," Chad told Sokka to prove to him that he should be proud. "I wrestled one....Not everyone can wrestle a troll, you know."
