Aly sat on her desk as she watched her students file into the room. Start of the term was always fun especially with these students. She waited until everyone had found a seat or at least a comfortable place to lean and began.

"What we need," she said. "Is a baseline that we can start with. So what I want from you today is to pair up and discuss your own experiences." She paused. "Your own or something you've seen done, a time someone tried to protect you. I don't want this to be an exercise in emo or browbeating so while I'm sure none of you would take it that way, let me just have said it."

"This can be anything. It doesn't have to be a life and death situation. You can have tried to protect your sister from dating the guy you didn't like." Aly grinned. "I'm a little sister though. Trust me when I say that never works."

"But what I'd like you to do is talk about what works in your experience. What doesn't. Is the hardest thing protecting someone from themselves?" Aly shifted on the desk slightly, her hand reaching to stroke the black beads at her throat. "Most of you know I'm bored by theory. So this is going to be our 'theoretical class.' Next week we'll get into practicalities now that this is out of the way."

"And by the way, just so you know if I'm not around or you can't find me, Zuko and Dean Winchester are your TAs. Be nice to them."

[OOC: I am SO SORRY for the lateness/lameness of the class. I kinda forgot today was Tuesday. *cough* Great omen for the semester, yes. OCD is ~~a'coming.~~ Up! ]

"Sure," Wyatt grinned. "I'm pretty good at it myself."

"Well why don't you start then?" Claire asked, turning towards him to put on a 'listening' face.

"Who have you protected?"

"Well, myself and my brother to start," Wyatt said. "My powers activated just about a year ago when a car was going to hit us. A shield went up around us and saved us. I had no clue how I did that then."

"Powers?"

Claire tilted her head, fingering her pencil thoughtfully.

"What kind of powers?"

Talking about himself was something Wyatt was very good at. "I'm half-witch, half-whitelighter," he said. "A whitelighter is a kind of angel. Right now I can do spells, teleport, move things with my mind, and heal."

"Part Angel? Cool."

It's possible that might have been a bit too much of a forced reaction.

"So how did you know to but a forcefield up?"

"It was just instinct, I guess," Wyatt said. "I saw the car just a few seconds before it would've hit me and Chris, and then all of a sudden this shield went up around us and deflected the car so it didn't hit us. The driver was drunk so he didn't see the shield, which was a good thing, because explaining that would be pretty much impossible."

"That's helpful," Claire remarked. "So is it always just instinct?"

"It seems like the first time anything happens it is," Wyatt said, thinking about it. "Like the first time I healed someone, Anders had broken his leg and I was trying to help get him to the clinic. I'm working on being able to do it whenever I want, though."

"So if you ever need to develop a new power, get someone you know in trouble?" Claire said, joking in tone.

And then she realised what she just said. "That sucks."

Wyatt laughed. "I suppose that's one way of looking at it," he said. "But it's more like the powers seem to come when I need them. How about you, how do you protect people?"

Claire shrugged.

"I can't do forcefields, or anything like that."

"You don't need powers to help people, though," Wyatt said. "There's all kinds of other ways, like not letting a friend drink and drive, ever done something like that?"

Claire's eyes snapped wide, and she shook her head, silently.
