Shop Class Week 2 Period 5 Basic Wiring

Or, how to treat electrical burns

The Danger Shop is set up like the Tool Time set again with individual stations set up with a wall with a light switch and fuse box, wall outlet, and a table lamp on a work bench. There are also shiny tools. There's a multitool at each station along with linesman's pliers, wire strippers, and various other tools.

CyberHeidi announced: "Does everybody know what time it is?" while holding the cue card again as Tim jogged around the corner.

"Hello, I'm Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, and today's class is about wiring. Now we all know that dorm equipment isn't the most sturdy stuff, so if something happens to your room like someone pulls the cord out from the plug by yanking on it, or the switch in the lamp breaks, or someone pours beer on the outlet, you'll need to fix it unless you have the money lying around for new lamps. Or if you want your security deposit back."

"First off, you'll need to rewire the lamp at each station. The cord is frayed at the end and the socket's bent, so you'll need to put a new plug on it and replace the socket. To start," he said, approaching his own station, "you'll need to make sure the power's off, by either disconnecting the lamp or turning off the fuse as I've already done," he said, waving at the fuse box. "Now, this lamp has a broken bulb in it and the socket's been damaged by someone prying out the base. A quick trick is to take half a potato," he holds up half a potato, "and jam it into the socket and unscrew the bulb this way--" he jams it in and promptly shocks himself as he relied on his non-chosen-yet TA to make sure the power was out. He tries to walk it off by pacing and not holding his hand like it's not going numb. "Um. There's a handout about wiring for the lamp and the dimmer switch. Have at!"

He's not crying from the pain, that's just your imagination.

Peter took notes on what not to do. How sensible.

Luke tried not to facepalm too noticably.

Like A.J. was really going to be paying attention to a lecture when there was a multitool in front of him.

Really didn't help that he was looking over his shoulder every two seconds in a paranoid fashion, either...

Abigail wasn't rolling her eyes, but she was really tempted.

After reviewing on what she had to do Naomi began to rewire the lamp.

"You alright, sir?" Bo asked helpfully.

"If you say so," Bo said doubtfully. But respectfully.

Bo showed him. He was doing quite well, actually.

Bo quickly killed the power, wondering a little why this man was in charge. "Uh, sir?"

Bo cast another doubtful look at his hand before screwing in a bulb and turning the power on. Yes, in that order.

He grinned as it lit up.

A.J. had a sympathetic look for Tim before setting to work on his lamps. He'd done that a couple times accidentally with the Empire sign. And once purposely made Mark do it. And the Empire sign had a whole lot more juice than these lamps.

A.J. always did well with his tool just ask Annette. He was having no trouble at all with the lamp, working through the project with ease.

"So," he grinned a little when he noticed the teacher drifting over. "This class will get challenging right?"

"Silly me. How could I forget the dimmer switch..."
