Art 101, Period 4, Class 2 (Monday 9-10)

"Bad news," Steve said by way of greeting. "We're not doing art again today either. Sorry. We'll get to that next week, I promise, but this week I just want to go over a few of the basics of visual art." He began handing around a set of worksheets. "First," he began, "there's perspective, which is how far away from or close to the observer objects appear. When you're working in two dimensions, like a drawing or a painting, there are a lot of ways to make it less...flat. Your worksheet goes into more detail. Read it. Seriously. Ask me any questions if you have them.

"Then there's shape, which is important because the shapes you use in a piece of art can really effect the way it's perceived. A piece with a lot of harsh angles is going to be seen differently than one with flowing lines and curves, and on that same note you need to think about the patterns you include in your art. Also, there's this really neat thing called the golden ratio--which, it's math, don't run away, but it's a pattern found in nature, and I'm horrible at math so I can't really explain it, but there is a pattern to how things are structured. And some artists--especially Leonardo da Vinci, if you're from a world that has him--have exploited it in their works, which is why they look so, for lack of a better word, 'perfect.' You can apply it to all sorts of shapes: rectangles, flowers, the human face. It's pretty neat stuff, and if you're interested and want to learn more, there's a sheet in your packet there.

"Then there's color. Color is a mindbogglingly huge subject. Every culture views color differently. There are some languages that have only two words for colors, okay? There's just 'bright' and 'dark' and everything is a shade of bright or dark. And of course some people don't perceive color the same way as others. If any of you happen to be color blind, you might want to let me know, though. So, what I've given you, instead of a sheet on what color is, since I think you all understand that at least, is a very incomplete list of colors.

"So, I want everyone to look over their worksheets and think about how you can apply these principles to your artwork. Then I want you to look at the list of colors and find one you've never heard of before, and your homework for next week is to find something out about it to tell the class. Any questions?"

"Sorry," Jamie said shaking his head. "You just look familiar to me somehow. I'm Jamie Madrox and I'm actually an old student. I was just gone over the summer."

"Hello, then," she smiled. "My name is Naminé. Have we perhaps met in your world, but not mine yet? It's all right. I've experienced that the other way around, here. Very disconcerting when people who should know you don't."

"Um yeah. The name sounds familiar but... well it's been a while since I've been gone," Jamie said shaking his head. "Plus I've met enough different people I know from my world that I should probably expect that. The deja vu feeling is new though."

Naminé laughed. "Perhaps I look similar to someone, then. I'm sorry to say I don't recognize you in return, but I haven't been around terribly long. As myself, I mean."

She looked at their teacher and back at him again. "Are you always so ... eager to cooperate with class? Or do you know him as well and you're having fun at his expense?"

"Mr. Rogers?" Jamie said looking over at him. "He looks kind of familiar but I don't know why. And I'm always willing to help out the school. Why last year I was principal for a day."

"I imagine you were rather good at it," she said with a light smile. "And volunteering your services as a model. How very kind you are."

"What can I say?" Jamie said. "I'm great at volunteering. Last year the Dean of Students asked me to be a one man beautification committee for campus."

Naminé raised an eyebrow. "Is there any chance he was asking that you fix something that you had, say, inadvertantly broken?" she asked innocently.

"Okay I might have gotten thrown into detention by our old Ethics professor. A lot."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Naminé laughed. "I'm astonished. A model student such as yourself? I suppose we all have our moments of weakness. I've already got detention myself."

"Oh?" Jamie said looking impressed. "What did you do?"

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Her eyes sparkled. "The Debate instructor informed us of our duty to conduct debate in our own personal lives, at every opportunity. If he did not mean for this to include via written note during class, then he should have said so."

"Ahhhh," Jamie said with a nod. "Passing notes. Tsk. Tsk."

Re: Talk to the TA

"I'm being led down the road to delinquency," she said, with her best innocent expression. "Which doesn't hold as an excuse, as I did pass the note first."

"Obviously you are way too bad for me to hang out with," Jamie laughed. "You could be a horrible influence."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I could. Shocking that Mr. Rogers gave me a position of authority." Her eyes were dancing. "I will probably abuse it in unspeakable ways. I'm plotting my coup already."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh! I took a class on that!" Jamie replied gleefully. "Let me know if you need any pointers."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"On plotting a coup?" Naminé laughed. "I shouldn't be surprised. I took a class on Self-Confidence that was actually about how to be a warlord of some type. The teacher was happiest on the day that I stood up and told him his class was nonsense. How odd."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep! It was all about revolution," Jamie grinned. "Then I took over the class for a day. Who was teaching you self-confidence?"

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I suppose if you started a revolution in a class about revolution, you must have gotten high marks," she mused. "And the professor for that class was Ares. It seemed to have less to do with self-confidence and more to do with scenarios involving prisoners getting abused and villagers fighting one another."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Jamie's face twitched a bit at the mention of prisoners getting abused but quickly went back to his jovial grin.

"Yeah, I'm not getting the connection really," Jamie said shaking his head. "And I dont get why Ares is still here. I totally fired him when I was principal."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] palestshadow.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Naminé tilted her head slightly, noticing his face twitch. "I'm glad you fired him," she said carefully. "He was not a terribly nice person. He didn't seem very concerned that some of the students had unpleasantness raised because of his choice in topics. I don't think that's very considerate, personally."

Re: Talk to the TA

[identity profile] multi-madrox.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. I forget why I did fire him," Jamie said scratching his head. "Probably because he annoyed one of my friends. You don't do that and get away with it."
