"Bad news," Steve said by way of greeting. "We're not doing art again today either. Sorry. We'll get to that next week, I promise, but this week I just want to go over a few of the basics of visual art." He began handing around a set of worksheets. "First," he began, "there's perspective, which is how far away from or close to the observer objects appear. When you're working in two dimensions, like a drawing or a painting, there are a lot of ways to make it less...flat. Your worksheet goes into more detail. Read it. Seriously. Ask me any questions if you have them.

"Then there's shape, which is important because the shapes you use in a piece of art can really effect the way it's perceived. A piece with a lot of harsh angles is going to be seen differently than one with flowing lines and curves, and on that same note you need to think about the patterns you include in your art. Also, there's this really neat thing called the golden ratio--which, it's math, don't run away, but it's a pattern found in nature, and I'm horrible at math so I can't really explain it, but there is a pattern to how things are structured. And some artists--especially Leonardo da Vinci, if you're from a world that has him--have exploited it in their works, which is why they look so, for lack of a better word, 'perfect.' You can apply it to all sorts of shapes: rectangles, flowers, the human face. It's pretty neat stuff, and if you're interested and want to learn more, there's a sheet in your packet there.

"Then there's color. Color is a mindbogglingly huge subject. Every culture views color differently. There are some languages that have only two words for colors, okay? There's just 'bright' and 'dark' and everything is a shade of bright or dark. And of course some people don't perceive color the same way as others. If any of you happen to be color blind, you might want to let me know, though. So, what I've given you, instead of a sheet on what color is, since I think you all understand that at least, is a very incomplete list of colors.

"So, I want everyone to look over their worksheets and think about how you can apply these principles to your artwork. Then I want you to look at the list of colors and find one you've never heard of before, and your homework for next week is to find something out about it to tell the class. Any questions?"

Take notes, nap, whisper to each other.

Savannah was taking notes as he talked and looking over the handouts.

Sulley was here for the class on time this week and sat at the back, quietly taking notes. He wasn't so much sitting in a chair as squatting and hoping no one would notice. He really didn't want to break anything on his first proper day in the class.

He was kind of hard to NOT notice.

Mostly because big, blue and hair.

Which is why Jamie was looking at Sulley with interest.

Sulley gave a weak grin and a little wave.

Jamie tilted his head and looked at Sulley.

Okay. He was blue. He was fuzzy. He was big.

He didn't look like a cat but maybe he did one of the evolution things again.

"Hank?"

As the grin dropped from his face, Sulley kept his voice to a low whisper. "I think you have me confused with someone else." But did that mean that there was another big, blue, furry monster around?

Yep. Definitely not Hank, the voice was totally wrong.

"Sorry," Jamie replied with a grin. "Back home I know someone also big blue and fuzzy. Wasn't sure if he'd changed his appearance again. I'm Jamie."

"Oh, no problem," he brushed it off, but was still silently wondering. "I'm Sulley. Are you new too?"

"Nope. I've been here for a year though I missed the very end and was gone all summer," Jamie replied. "So are you a mutant?"

"No, monster. What's a mutant?"

Jamie had been in Fandom long enough not to even bat an eye at having a monster as a student. "Oh, a mutant is just a person with a certain gene that allows them to have specific abilities or look different, kind like yourself," Jamie replied. "So you're a monster? Where'd you come from?"

Naminé smiled to herself upon noticing the rather large, blue furry member of their class. "Are you new here?" she asked, also noticing his hesitancy.

Well, and she supposed that she would have remembered seeing him, but that was less diplomatic.

Sulley nodded. "Got here last week. I'm Sulley."

"Welcome, then. My name is Naminé." She smiled. "Are you all right? That doesn't look very comfortable, sitting like that."

"Oh, this?" Sulley suddenly had shifty eyes for a moment. "I'm working out. Good for the quads." He had very little clue what he was talking about.

"I see," she said with a light smile. "Good idea. You mustn't neglect your quads, you know."

"They're good for jumping and walking and squatting like this."

"Well then," she reasoned. "Yours will be rather excellent by the end of term. The envy of all quad-havers, perhaps."

"Not the accomplishment I expected from Art class, but you take what you can get, I guess."

Steve nodded to Sulley and made a mental note to find some chairs and art supplies more suited to his build before next week.

Savannah gave Sulley a friendly smile as she was taking notes.

Sulley gave a small smile and a little wave back.

A.J. started taking notes, but an art class with no art? Pssssh. He made art instead of taking notes, then. He knew all this stuff anyway, and at least he tried to implement them in everything he was doodling?

John was tired, so he slouched in his chair and propped his head on his fist. But he still attempted to pay attention. Especially when he heard about the golden ratio thing. He thought that was pretty cool.
