Debating, Friday September 7

A good three minutes after the bell had rung, Mr. Noblet walked into the classroom. He took one look at the faces staring back at him, gave a smile, put his briefcase down on the desk, and left the room.



Screaming could be heard coming from the hall.
“I am not teaching those kids! I had some of them last time. Repeats! For God’s sake, please be reasonable! Aaaaaarrrgghhhh!”

A few moments later, Chuck stormed back in, red-faced and with a clenched jaw. “Hello, students. I see some new people here. And you have no idea how happy it makes me to see some fresh faces.” His jaw remained clenched, and though he tried to turn it into a smile, the effect was nothing short of disconcerting. “I am Mr. Noblet, and I will be your teacher for Debating class. If you’re here for another class, I suggest you leave and go find that room.”

He watched, a little hopeful. When nobody left, he gave a wracking sigh of disappointment, then moved away to write on the board.

Winning

He turned back around to face the class, tapping the word with his chalk. “When it comes down to it, that is what debating is all about. It’s not about progression of ideas both ways, it’s about letting your ideas progress by forcing them on someone else. If you let yourself consider, even for the slightest minute, that your opponent is correct, you’ve let your resolve waver, and you’ve already lost.”

Snide remarks, personal jibes, pulling in seemingly unrelated material and going off on tangents are a few things that we will discuss, as they are all great ways to trip up the other person.

"In this class, we will spend the majority of our classes learning debating techniques, and once a month we will have practical debates, sometimes on set topics, and sometimes on topics of your own choosing. I also hope to have you debate on your own time with other people, for grades and extra credit. With any luck, you’ll all know people who you’d like to convince that they’re wrong. Here, you can do it and get good grades for it. So, that, in general, is what we’ll be doing for this class.

"I am still in need of a TA, someone who would be willing to teach a class in the event that I am sick, be it physically or just plain tired of seeing your faces. If this duty is performed well, there may be extra credit involved. See me after class.

"Any questions?” He looked out at the students, trying to be simultaneously welcoming to the new ones and forbidding to those he knew.

Cher was listening totally seriously. After all, this was a very important subject, and she liked the focus on winning!

She kind of wanted to make him over, though. Maybe some colored contacts...

Charlie had flinched at the screaming, then watched Mr. Noblet wide-eyed as he lectured. Not exactly what she'd been expecting, but it had to be entertaining to watch.

This was one of the very few lectures in life Haruhi bothered to even semi pay attention to. That reason would be because hey, she agreed with some of his points about debating. Winning was everything to her, she enjoyed it greatly, and loosing was absolutely not tolerated.

She definitely wanted to listen on how to win.

Naminé noticed Valentine, and with a smile noticed that Valentine was taking notes.

She tore a small scrap of paper from her notepad and scribbled on it: You hardly need the encouragement, you know.

She placed it on his desk when she hoped their seemingly-unstable professor wasn't looking.

From the moment "Winning" was put on the board, Turtle was on the edge of her seat in rapt attention, because, from that moment on, that was all that mattered, and she wanted to win. She didn't even know what it was; it didn't even matter.

Jim took no notes. He had Noblet for a class last year, he knew that the wouldn't be useful.

Instead he tapped his pen to the tune of the 1812 Overture.

Willow stayed after class. "Hi Mr. Noblet! It's nice to see you too. Did I hear something about helping you in class for extra credit?"

Willow tried to act casual and not at all like someone who would curse her mom for a higher GPA.

Willow was the one student that Chuck didn't mind seeing. "Well, you always listen in class, and I know you're a hard worker." He pretended to ponder, but his mind was already made up. Chuck's relationships with students were nothing if not completely based on a system of favoritism.

After he felt that the tension had been sufficiently prolonged, Chuck said, "I think you've got what it takes. You're the TA."

Long-winded OOC

OOC: Whoooo! I’m happy to see everyone, new faces and old! Couple quick notes:

It’s so easy and fun to get detention from Chuck. Even if you character’s a goody-two-shoes, Chuck might just be in a bad mood and decide to take it out on the kids. So you can always ping in here and ask for a detention, we’ll be more than happy to oblige.

Chuck acts like a jerk to everyone. I, on the other hand, am only a jerk to people I know in person. ^_^ If you ever have any questions, concerns, or ideas to cause mischief, I can already tell you that I’m interested to hear them. So don’t be scared that I’ll ignore you or anything; send an E-mail my way, and I’ll get right on it.

I also realize that Chuck will be teaching your kids how to argue, and this means that tempers could get short, if this isn’t handled correctly. Chuck’s a powder keg, but I really don’t want any muns to get angry. So when your character is arguing with another character, make sure that it’s your character. This is a game, and meant to be fun. No matter what the characters say, make sure that you’re treating the other players with respect and decency.

I’m really excited about this class. Cheerleader on caffeine excited. New stack of books excited. Going to see a show excited. So I’m looking forward to having a crazy blast!

That said, I feel as though I should make a general disclaimer myself, hurr. I know for sure my character more than likely might get cranky and hot-headed during a debate a lot of times. But never fear, ilu all, and none of it would ever be my personal feelings. I'm too apathetic to be a debater anyway :|b

This is going to rule. Especially as he's just weird enough to ping my goody-two-shoes' dry sense of humor, so she might start trying to subtly mess with him. Oh, man.
