Fandom Invasions, Class #1 (Thursday, period 3)

John was waiting at the front of the classroom, leaning on his desk as the students filed in.

"Good morning," he said with a smile, when everyone was settled. "Welcome to Fandom Invasions. I'm sure all of you have noticed by now that Fandom is a rather unusual place. It's what makes it such a good fit for so many of us who don't really fit in elsewhere, but it also has a downside. Namely, that invasions of varying kinds happen on a disturbingly regular basis. If you haven't been through one yet, chances are very good that you will before you leave. The purpose of this class is to make sure you're prepared when that happens by looking at invasions of the past.

"If you look at the syllabus, you'll see a list of which past events we'll be focusing on and when. We'll be making extensive use of simulations and for that reason, we'll be meeting in the Danger Shop starting next week and every week thereafter.

"For this first class, I want to get to know you and your experience with the stranger aspects of Fandom. So I'd like to go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves, tell how long they've been in Fandom, and talk about the weirdest thing that's happened to them since they've been here.

"I'll start," John said with a slightly wolfish smile. "My name is John Winchester and this class marks the beginning of my second year teaching here. One of many weird things that I've done in the year I've been here is stalk and kill a genuine saber tooth cat right practically on my doorstep." He looked around and picked a student at random. "Next?"

When everyone had had their turn, John continued, "As you can see, there is no lack of weirdness to go around. Hopefully by the end of this class, you'll be as prepared as possible to deal with the next strange thing that happens." He looked around at the class. "Any questions?"

"I'm Eve Levine and my weirdest Fandom experience... I don't know, a lot of it's been weird. The drunken squirrels are pretty fun, though, usually. Unless you trip over one of them. And the hellbeast in pink wasn't weird so much as she was prone to inducing visions of homicide. So.. hrm." She frowned, giving it serious thought. "I'd have to say, then, that the weirdest so has to be the prehistoric invasion or whatever it was. Because really, dinosaurs and sabertooth tigers do not belong on school grounds."

"I'm Jenny Sparks, I've been in Fandom since the beginning of the second summer session, and the weirdest thing so far has been that I've enjoyed most of my classes, and I've been peaceably rooming with a cheerleader." After a moment, comprehension seemed to dawn and she said, "OH, you mean stuff other people would think was weird? I electrocuted a stegosaurus. At least I think it was a stegosaurus."

"Haruhi Suzumiya," she announced, proudly standing by the side of her desk while speaking. "I only got here Monday, but if the other day indicated anything, this place is gonna be awesome! Weird events? Hardly! It's all so amazing! I can't believe I've been missing out on these invasions this whole time!" She stopped to look at John in awe. "You really killed a saber tooth cat?"

"My name is Valentine," Valentine said with a bit of a wave of his hands. Speaking with his hands was fun. And attention-grabbing. And he was quite the showoff. So it was all good. "I'd have to say that nearly being eaten by a large, very toothy reptile would have to be one of the stranger experiences I've had since I got here, sea-creature invasion and school being totally flattened notwithstanding. Then again, there was that one time that I ate that cupcake and wound up directing an award-winning sci-fi drama about a chicken and the sludge monster that she loved..."

Valentine was also prone to babbling.

"I'm Shawn," he started. "I've been here a year and a half, about... My experience in Fandom, well football-headed dudes, cyber dinosaurs, trolls, axe wielding ghosts, a whole bunch of weetiny things and food rain."

"Hey, I'm Dick. I've been here since January. I guess the weirdest experience I've had so far was waking up as a chick. That pretty much scarred me for life." Dick said. "But there's also the whole squirrel thing and my friend that I've known forever has a twin here."

"I'm Peter Petrelli," Peter said. "I guess after the dinosaurs my weirdest Fandom experience has been finding out there's people who have powers - and I'm one of them."

"I'm Wyatt Halliwell," Wyatt said. "And I've been here since the beginning of the year. I don't know if I can say for sure just what the weirdest thing was. I've seen my brother turned into a girl and met his possible kids from the future, I got turned into a little kid, and I helped my aunt vanquish her possessed demon boyfriend and then bring him back from the demonic wastelands. I think the most disturbing thing was the weekend we were all changed into alternate versions of ourselves, because I didn't like what I became."

"I'm Adam Park and I've been here since the start of the summer," he began. "As for my weirdest Fandom experience? I'd have to say it's a toss up between the dinosaur invasion and the creatures that showed up at the music festival." His shoulders ached just thinking about them.

"I am Mizuno Ami, and i have been here since January. I think the strangest thing was when my friend Setsuna" Ami frowned slightly, thinking of Setsuna being gone "got kidnapped by some strange people and I recovered all my memories and found out i could fight." She did not elaborate.

Troy smiled, excited about the class. "I'm Troy Bolton, and I've been here since the middle of the summer. I guess the weirdest thing is wanting to stay at a school without a basketball team." He paused. "And the whole thing with being trapped overnight in a tiny cave by a dinosaur was pretty weird, too."
