Basic Japanese - Week 1 - Wednesday Sept 5th 3rd period

“Hello everyone,” Yondaime smiled from the front of the class. “Welcome to Beginning Japanese. We’ve got a lot to cover in the fifteen weeks that we have together so I apologize for jumping right into it.” He paused to hand out a large packet to everyone, moving with lightening speed through the room before continuing.

“We’re going to be doing introductions, but they’re going to be in Japanese,” he smiled and flashed back and forth from the back of the room to the front as he spoke. “In your packets are common greetings, words, numbers, phrases you’re going to hear me say a lot and the chart of hiragana which are the basic Japanese alphabet. I don’t expect you all to know these by heart for the next class, the packets that I’m giving out can be used as notes on the final with the exception of the hiragana chart.”

“First of all, there are a few ways you can address me. Just sensei is the most common way, since I’m the only teacher in the class room, but if you wanted to be more specific you could call me Yondaime-sensei or even Uzumaki-sensei. Calling me by my first name or even my last name with no suffixes added onto it is considered the height of rudeness and if we were in Japan or even back in my home you’d get detention for it,” He smirked and paused by the desk. “But not here. So greetings and introducing yourself! Since this class is before noon, when you all come in I would greet you with ‘Ohaiyo gozaimasu’ which of course means ‘Good Morning’ and I would hope that you each would respond back with the same.” Yondaime went to the chalkboard and wrote out the word in normal alphabet and hiragana. “Today, I’m going to break you up into pairs so you can work on introducing yourselves to each other, then we’re going to go over asking what something is in Japanese and then just a brief run through of numbers since they’re really simple.” Yeah, except to him all of this was really simple.

It isn't very long at all into the very short lecture that Adah had to blink her eyes hard and give her head a little shake. He moved around a lot; it hurt to try to watch him, so she just gave up and focused on taking notes, but even that was difficult because he seemed to talk too quickly for her, too, and all the writing she'd been doing lately had made Adah's wrist hurt terribly, but she was determined. It helped to roll the strange words around in her head after committing them to paper. Hiragana. Sensei. Yondaime. Uzumaki. She liked that one last one. She liked how it made her feel like it would have a different ending, and then surprised her with the one she got.

Billy found that he already knew a lot of the stuff on the packet, but was pleased to see there were plenty of new things on it as well.

Flipping through the packet and feeling a surge of excitement at all the new things to read, to consume, to devour and retain was enough to prevent Adah from freaking out too much over how she was going to try to avoid speaking in class. So much! So different than any of the other languages she'd learned so far, except Kilanga. She had to stop after a second to catch her breath or else she'd start losing control. She couldn't wait to rub Japanese in Leah's face, and smirked to herself as her fingers danced over the top of the packet, already hearing her sister complaining about how it wasn't fair that Adah should know so many languages when she didn't even talk.

“For introductions generally they will go this way. Please look to your notes for reference as this exact conversation is written there as well and start becoming familiar with how things are written out in Japanese. I’d like you to go through with partners and run through the various greetings.”

Okay, now Adah could panic. Her fingers twitched on the edge of her packet as she looked down at it, trying very, very hard to maintain a steady pace of breathing. No matter how perfectly she matched her counting to a steady beat, though, her inhales rushed forward too quickly, her exhales retreated back too fast, and her head was starting to swim. It wasn't that she she didn't think she could get the words; they were already starting to cement themselves in her memory, like all languages did, but...but...speaking them. Speaking anything. Highly problematic. Her eyes might have been a bit lost as she looked around; it might have looked like she was seeking out a partner, but she was really looking for the nearest exit.

"Ohaiyo gozaimasu," Sabriel said carefully to the girl she recognized from yesterday. She looked at her packet and added, "Ogenki desu ka?"

She had a feeling that her accent was probably horrible.

Anders was panicking a little and unsuccessfully trying to hide it by going through his packet repeatedly. Maybe he should seriously start reconsidering playing baseball in Japan as an option.

Troy was looking through the package, staring at the hiragana and wondering what had possessed him to take Japanese. He was ready to try and muddle his way through with someone, though.

“Once you’re done with Greetings, feel free to ask me how to say certain words in Japanese. The question again is in your packets. You can ask me how to say anything."

“Numbers! One of the easiest things besides ‘yes’ and ‘no’.” Yondaime smiled. “Just go over them enough and maybe quiz each other regarding the numbers. With what’s given on the chart, see if you can count up from twenty.”
