Keeping Your Wits About You... [Monday 2nd Period 10-11] Class # 1

And so another school year began.

Even though he didn't have the first class of the day, Wilson still had a nice spread of coffee, tea and sodas on a table next to a plate of White Chocolate Key Lime Bars for the students as they came in to the first class. Aziraphale had been a dear and helped Wilson bring everything up from the house and set up in the class room before the angel had headed off for his own office hours.

The sign in sheet sat next to the sugary treats.

Leaning against the front of his desk, Wilson sipped on a cup of coffee as he watched the students make their way into the room and find their seats. Once he had counted off the right number of noses, he set the coffee aside and pushed away from the desk, turning up the cuffs of a shirt that seemed too long for him no reason for that, really.

"Good morning," Wilson greeted his class with a smile. "All right, this is Keeping your wits about you and I am your professor for this term, Dr. James Wilson. Many of you I have already met, some of you I have yet to have the pleasure, so today we're going to do some introductions."

Walking behind the desk, he pulled a stack of papers out of his briefcase and began to walk them around to the class.

"This is your syllabus for the semester. Please note that I will hold office hours on Tuesdays from 9:30am until 12:00 noon but I am always available to schedule a meeting if you need to talk to me outside either class or Tuesdays."

Syllabus passed out, Wilson walked back to the desk and hopped up on the top.

"Okay, I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself and some of my experiences recently since I came to Fandom and why I'm teaching this class. Afterwards, I'm going to break you into 3 groups and I want you to introduce yourselves to each other while I talk with you, one on one. Our one on one conversations will be just between you and I as I need to get an idea of any and all innate powers of abilities you possess so that the exercises we do in class are properly tailored to each of you."

Smiling, he reached for his coffee.

"Painless, I promise."

Lecture

Taking a sip of coffee, he leaned back and studied each of the students before speaking again.

"I am a normal, garden varity mortal male from the 21st century Earth. I don't come from the past or the future, I am a medical doctor, my specialty is oncology and I'm about 40 years old."

Holding his hands up, he gave a little shrug.

"Pretty run of the mill. However, I have managed to survive here in Fandom with all it's unique quirks, as well as visit Hell, the Underworld and a creepy little village in Maine with my skin intact. Let me explain."

Keeping his coffee close, Wilson began to tell of some of his more adventursome times in Fandom, hitting such highlights as vampire attacks, trolls, creepy towns in Maine, giant tongues in the Underworld, dying to save Lucifer and most recently dealing with the Lilim and banishing voiceless gods.

He also threw in what he felt was his most frightening experience Parents Weekend!.

"So, those are some of the highlights but I like to think that they show, you don't need to be overwhelmingly powerful or outrageously armed to the teeth in order to survive and thrive in any situation, so long as you keep your wits about you, use your head and keep your mind open to any and all possibilities."

Finishing off his coffee, Wilson stood up and headed for the chalk board.

"That, is what this class aims to help you learn through a combination of lecture and practical application. For the rest of today, as I said, we'll be doing a bit of a meet and greet. I have you split into groups to talk while you wait for me to call you each out individually so we can chat privately."

Class Assignment:

Break into the follow groups, sit and meet and greet. I will call you each over for 5 minutes or so to talk with me privately

"I would appreciate that very much," said Anne who had no idea what happened the last time one of your characters offered to teach one of mine about technology and why does this keep happening. "I've only just mastered the concept of the television, and even then I'm not sure how to make the pictures change. I know Carmela says funny lovely-sounding words to it to make it do that, but I don't know how to do it myself."

Chris looked confused. "I'm not sure how Carmela does that," he admitted. "But most televisions have remote controls," he explained also unaware of the bizarre parallel and I have NO IDEA why that keeps happening but at least my characters don't automatically hate Anne?.

"Whatever they use, I don't know how they work," Anne said with a frown. "It's awful feeling so lost and confused. I thought being picked up from the Bright River train platform only to be told I wasn't who was expected because I wasn't a boy was bewildering enough, but all these confusing devices make it ever so much worse."

Yeah, which is a good thing because making Anne emo is a CRIME (but it's funny), but POOR ANDERS, always automatically on your hate list.

"I can imagine," Chris said sympathetically. "I'm in 306 if you need help with anything. Why did someone think you were a boy?"

It's his own fault for being a jerk to my characters!! :)

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no," Anne said hastily, "it's not that they thought I was a boy, only that I was supposed to have been a boy. Matthew and Marilla were looking to adopt a little boy to help on the farm, you see, and got me instead."

Chris nodded. "What happened to your parents?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"They died of fever when I was just a baby." Anne related this in the matter-of-fact, yet sentimental, way she always used to speak of the subject. "Within four days tof each other -- isn't that tragically romantic? A neighbour woman took me because no one else in Bolingbroke knew what to do with me, and I helped take care of her children until her intoxicated husband was killed falling under a train and she had to break up housekeeping. So then I went to live with Mrs. Hammond from upriver and take care of her children until her husband died and she broke up housekeeping. And then I was living in the orphan asylum for a while, until I came to Green Gables."

She paused only a moment for breath. "And that is where I've been ever since, that is, until I came here."

"Wow, you've lived a lot of places," Chris remarked. "My parents were killed in an accident when I was about a year old, but my grandfather raised me and my brother. He sent us here in January."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're orphans too?" asked Anne. "I'm glad that gives us something in common, although I'm not glad that the circumstances are what they are. I came here by accident -- why did your grandfather send you and your brother here?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"He thought we could learn a lot here," Chris explained vaguely, not wanting to scare her with talk of witchcraft since she was from the 1800s. "How did you end up here by accident?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh," said Anne, who had been about to say that he wouldn't believe her if she told him, only to realize the patent absurdity of such a statement here, "I was supposed to go across Prince Edward Island to Charlottetown, so I could go to Queen's Academy and get my teaching certificate. But I got caught up imagining an island with a castle while I was on the train, and then the train stopped and here I was! Interesting mixups at train stations seem to be my lot in life, but so far they've been quite serendipitous so I really can't complain, don't you think?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like it," Chris agreed. "If you like it here and there's no one back home worrying about you, then it worked out for the best."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
A look of extreme guilt crossed Anne's face. "They think I'm at Queen's, I suppose. I should probably tell them -- oh, surely Josie and Ruby and Jane and Gilbert have noticed by now that I'm missing. They will be worried sick -- and me gone so long without a word! I'll never be done getting myself into these awful scrapes!"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure it will be fine," Chris assured her, reaching over to pat her hand. "You shouldn't have any trouble getting a letter home. That's one good thing about the island."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you sure?" queried Anne tremulously. "There won't be any problem with sending mail to the past?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Chris nodded. "The island is weird like that. It lets you communicate with pretty much anyone, anywhere, any time."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Anne, whose standard definition of 'weird' was a little more old-fashioned than Chris's, gave an eloquent little shiver. "Oh, it is, isn't it! Strange and mysterious . . . but not ominous at all, at least not when there aren't giant reptiles wandering through town."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah... well," Chris sighed. "A lot of weird things happen on this island. Dangerous weird things."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Dangerous?" asked Anne. "Dangerous as in thrilling or dangerous as in mortal peril? Not that mortal peril is necessarily not thrilling, but one without the other is perfectly acceptable."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"A little bit of both," Chris admitted. "But there are a lot of people here who are good at protecting everyone else."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I've noticed that," said Anne, thinking of her roommate, and Teddy, among others. "You seem like the dashing heroic type yourself."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Chris blinked and blushed slightly. "Thanks. I do what I can."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"I knew it!" exulted Anne. "You seemed like the noble and caring type. In that case, I'm even more pleased to make your acquaintance, Chris Halliwell."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
That made Chris's blush darken a little. "Well, I'm pleased to make your acquaintance as well, Anne Shirley."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Anne was oblivious to the blushing, but she did give him the best curtsey she could while sitting down. "It's always nice to know I have someone else to count on if I get myself into an awful scrape. I get into so many of them, it's just dreadful."
