Keeping Your Wits About You... [Monday 2nd Period 10-11] Class # 1

And so another school year began.

Even though he didn't have the first class of the day, Wilson still had a nice spread of coffee, tea and sodas on a table next to a plate of White Chocolate Key Lime Bars for the students as they came in to the first class. Aziraphale had been a dear and helped Wilson bring everything up from the house and set up in the class room before the angel had headed off for his own office hours.

The sign in sheet sat next to the sugary treats.

Leaning against the front of his desk, Wilson sipped on a cup of coffee as he watched the students make their way into the room and find their seats. Once he had counted off the right number of noses, he set the coffee aside and pushed away from the desk, turning up the cuffs of a shirt that seemed too long for him no reason for that, really.

"Good morning," Wilson greeted his class with a smile. "All right, this is Keeping your wits about you and I am your professor for this term, Dr. James Wilson. Many of you I have already met, some of you I have yet to have the pleasure, so today we're going to do some introductions."

Walking behind the desk, he pulled a stack of papers out of his briefcase and began to walk them around to the class.

"This is your syllabus for the semester. Please note that I will hold office hours on Tuesdays from 9:30am until 12:00 noon but I am always available to schedule a meeting if you need to talk to me outside either class or Tuesdays."

Syllabus passed out, Wilson walked back to the desk and hopped up on the top.

"Okay, I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself and some of my experiences recently since I came to Fandom and why I'm teaching this class. Afterwards, I'm going to break you into 3 groups and I want you to introduce yourselves to each other while I talk with you, one on one. Our one on one conversations will be just between you and I as I need to get an idea of any and all innate powers of abilities you possess so that the exercises we do in class are properly tailored to each of you."

Smiling, he reached for his coffee.

"Painless, I promise."

Lecture

Taking a sip of coffee, he leaned back and studied each of the students before speaking again.

"I am a normal, garden varity mortal male from the 21st century Earth. I don't come from the past or the future, I am a medical doctor, my specialty is oncology and I'm about 40 years old."

Holding his hands up, he gave a little shrug.

"Pretty run of the mill. However, I have managed to survive here in Fandom with all it's unique quirks, as well as visit Hell, the Underworld and a creepy little village in Maine with my skin intact. Let me explain."

Keeping his coffee close, Wilson began to tell of some of his more adventursome times in Fandom, hitting such highlights as vampire attacks, trolls, creepy towns in Maine, giant tongues in the Underworld, dying to save Lucifer and most recently dealing with the Lilim and banishing voiceless gods.

He also threw in what he felt was his most frightening experience Parents Weekend!.

"So, those are some of the highlights but I like to think that they show, you don't need to be overwhelmingly powerful or outrageously armed to the teeth in order to survive and thrive in any situation, so long as you keep your wits about you, use your head and keep your mind open to any and all possibilities."

Finishing off his coffee, Wilson stood up and headed for the chalk board.

"That, is what this class aims to help you learn through a combination of lecture and practical application. For the rest of today, as I said, we'll be doing a bit of a meet and greet. I have you split into groups to talk while you wait for me to call you each out individually so we can chat privately."

Class Assignment:

Break into the follow groups, sit and meet and greet. I will call you each over for 5 minutes or so to talk with me privately

"I'm coping," said Anne with a shaky smile. "I was dreadfully scandalized when I first arrived and found out I'd be living with a boy, but Cedric put me at ease about that rather quickly. Things are still a bit strange, but it's so different from Avonlea, and how could I possibly have turned down an adventure most people can only dream of?"

"He's good like that," she smiled, remembering any number of times she'd fallen asleep on his shoulder. "It is an adventure. Most of the time, a fun one. Although things like dinosaurs and trolls do add that edge of danger just to keep things from being boring."

"I'm going to be the only person on Prince Edward Island who'll ever have been able to say a dinosaur ate her dress," Anne conceded with a laugh that came close to sounding more like her usual cheery self. "It was very upsetting at the time, but afterward . . . well, I'm going to be stubbornly optimistic and say that all of it ought to make for some wonderful stories someday. Even if no one at home would believe me."

She said that last with a bit of resignation, as if she was used to people not believing her stories.

"They ate your dress? Oh no!" Isabel replied, shaking her head. "They used one of my friends as a soccer ball. He wound up in the clinic."

"Home is nice and normal?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"In the clinic? Oh, that's a hundred thousand times worse than having one's dress eaten." Never let it be said that Anne was impervious to the occasional dose of perspective. "I do hope he's all right now. He is all right, isn't he?"

She paused for breath before forging on, "Home is very normal indeed. I think it's the loveliest spot in Canada, but it is rather bereft of unusual happenings. We have the occasional bit of excitement when a farmer's cow breaks the fence and tramples a neighbour's field, although even I'd be awfully hard put to imagine, well, dinosaurs romping all over Avonlea."

Isabel smiled. For no reason. Really. "He's just fine now. It was just a little scary for a few days."

"It's sounds lovely. And quiet. Roswell can be a little more exciting." What with the alien hunters, the FBI agents, and evil aliens.

"Everyone seems to come from a more exciting place than I do," said Anne, though without a trace of envy in the words. Then, with significantly more scorn, "I'd love to see Josie Pye's face if she ever came to a place like this -- or went to Cedric's world! She's always prattling on and on about how dull and uninteresting poky old Avonlea is, but after one exciting weekend in Fandom, I think she'd never say another word about it."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Exciting is overrated. Sometimes I wish my life was more normal and less exciting," she admitted.

"Maybe she can come for a visit?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Anne spent several moments feeling horribly torn, one might even say racked with indecision.

"Don't tempt me," she finally said decisively. "It would be dreadfully wicked of me to want to invite Josie Pye for a visit just to . . . oh, say, introduce her to Deadpool. Besides, that's more Jane of Lantern Hill's style."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"That could be interesting," Isabel chuckled. "My brother floundered quite a bit when he came here for a visit." Mostly because Jack hit on him.

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"It would be awfully satisfying, which is why I shouldn't do it." Anne sighed the sigh of someone giving up a dearly cherished dream. "You didn't invite your brother to visit just for that reason, did you?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, in all honesty, I would have rather he stayed away," Isabel admitted. "He found out some things here that upset him quite a bit. It took a lot of talking until we worked things out."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry to hear that," said Anne, and meant it. "But I am glad that you worked things out. I don't have any siblings myself, but I can imagine it would be dreadful to have a quarrel with them and never quite make it up."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's hard, yes." Isabel was just grateful that things between her and Max had been okay when she left Antar.

"So what other classes are you taking?" Yes, that was a bit of a subject change.

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Whereupon Anne blushed profusely. "Oh . . . I have no idea how I ended up in the other class," she hedged.

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She raised an eyebrow at the blushing. "What classs is that?"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Anne whimpered and seemed to shake in her very seat. "It's . . . really not suitable for polite conversation . . ."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabel thought back over the class list. "OH!!! That class! Well, look at it this way? At least GOB's not teaching it. Trust me, that would have made it much, much worse."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I should imagine so," said Anne, mistaking Isabel's meaning as a reference to the Biblical figure. "All that sackcloth and ashes and mournfulness -- ugh!"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It took Isabel a moment to catch on. "Oh no! Not God. GOB. With a B. He's the twit that taught Sex Ed this summer. It was all I could do to keep from knocking him out and teaching the class myself. He was just wrong."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Anne was still too caught up in the horrifying mental image she'd conjured for herself to realize right away what Isabel had said. "And to imagine -- that -- with boils and horrible plagues is a hundred thousand times worse!"

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Considering GOB's lessons or lack there of about sexually transmitted diseases, Anne was more right then she thought. "Yeah, that was a possibility."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Anne was, unfortunately, far too susceptible to her own imagination. "And those poor oxen and donkeys . . ."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Anne? Please stop. The mental images might possibly scar me for life," Isabel said. "Alternative lifestyles are one thing. But that's going overboard."

Re: Class Activity - Group B

[identity profile] ladycfitzgerald.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Wasn't it, though? I'm sure it was a poetic and moving hymn to the resilience of the human spirit, but that was just going too far," Anne said with a sigh.
