Interdisciplinary Studies or Whatever, Class 7, Friday, Period 3

Today's class met at the main campfire which, despite the heat, was piled full of large logs and ready for a bonfire. Nearby was what looked at first glance to be some sort of salad bar.


"So," Squall said, once the students had arrived. "Let's pretend that you're stuck out in the wilderness with nothing to eat but..." He looked over at the salad bar-type-thing. "...some raw meat, vegetables, rice, and various sauces and glazes. Which is bound to happen at some point, right?" He shrugged. "And if you pretend that it's winter, you also need to keep warm. So. You need to start a fire." He passed out handouts and explained a little bit about fire bows, fire pistons, and flint and steel. "...Which all suck," he concluded. "If you really want to start a fire, you need one of two things: these" -- a box of matches -- " or this" -- a butane lighter. He tossed them both towards the class. "You'd better fight for them. Or share. Or something. Because you're going to have to make a fire, which might be pretty hard without them."

He shrugged. "Or maybe it'll be easy." Squall was surrounded by a green glow for a moment, and then the large campfire in front of him burst into a ginormous fireball before settling down to burn cheerfully.

He grinned at them.


When all -- most? some? -- of the fires were going, Squall called them back.

"Okay, party time. Over there is food. Cook it. Make something good." He shrugged. "Whatever."

Squall watched her and shrugged. "Thunder works best on things in the water and things made of metal. Wood, not so much."

"I know," Jenny whined. "I was just hopeful." And lazy.

His expression softened. "No fire spells? Then, good use of ingenuity."

"I control electricity," she said with a shrug. "Pretty much a one-trick pony that way."

"But a good trick to have, especially if you don't have to worry about how many charges you've used up," Squall said with a nod. "Just be careful not to get wet."

"Don't really have to worry that way," Jenny said. "Can't electrocute myself." Since she pretty much was electricity, but she didn't really want to explain that to Squall, as even she didn't quite understand how she could be made of electricity and fleshy-like at the same time.

"Really?" Squall asked. A lightning-based being not vulnerable to water attacks? "That's useful."

She shrugged. "It's come in handy a time or two, yeah. People always think they know what to expect, you know?"

Jenny nodded. "Ain't they just?"
