Vala wasn't at all downcast as she watched her students arrive in the Danger ~~Room~~ Shop as she'd ~~handwavily~~ notified them to, for the last class of the summer. Really.

"Good morning, everyone. Before we start, I'd like to say how much I've enjoyed teaching you and hope you've found it to be as useful as I'd hoped you would. Also, I know this is a vast area, especially for those of you who may be more inexperienced, so if you ever have any questions, I have two ears and they're both mostly sympathetic. It also turns out I have an office, so you can find me there occasionally as well."

She cleared her throat. "At the end of class, there will be an opportunity to ask for answers to questions that are still bothering you. First, however, I'd like you to attempt a simulated date. No," she glanced at Jeff, "you can't have safety padding this time. But this isn't a high-pressure situation, either. You're just having a nice, quiet dinner in a lovely little bistro with someone ~~whose ship you hijacked~~ you saw on the street, thought looked interesting, and asked to join you. Your job is to make conversation and leave, without getting food dumped on you or a drink thrown in your face."

A fire extinguisher was also in a prominent and visible place next to every romantic candlelit table for two, just in case.

She worried at her lower lip, uncharacteristically solemn. "Now, as I ruin the mood completely, I'd ask you to please stay away from the woman who's squatting in Principal Washburn's office. If she calls you down there, don't go. Don't pull stupid pranks and don't vow eternal revenge. She's very definitely unbalanced and needs professional help. You have teachers--let us take care of the problem, just this once. None of you should be hurt."

"Thank you all for a wonderful class, and I hope you have fun."

"Seems the thing to do," John replied, slouching into the chair. "So, what shall we discuss?"

"Hm," she said thoughtfully. "What's really sad is I keep wanting to lead with 'do you come here often' and I just can't bring myself to do it."

John chuckled, "Maybe I should ask you about your take on our weather, or how you're enjoying your time here at Fandom."

"I like the weather when it's cooled down enough to not cause immediate heatstrike, and Fandom's been good to me so far. I couldn't throw things at a dinosaur back home, so it ends up nicely in the plus category," she answered. "What about you? Is it everything you ever dreamed?"

"Oh, all that and more," John assured her. "Have you turned into any animals? It seems the latest thing in Fandom."

"No, though I did meet my friend's horse as a human," Jaina said. "I'm sure it's only a matter of time at this place, though. I understand that teenagers go through some changes but I think that might be a little much..."

"When I first heard how frequently these things happened, I made my roommate swear he wouldn't feed me kibble or make me sleep outside if I turned into a dog," John told her. "'Course, then I turned into a bunny in the park and my sidekick snuggled me and fed me carrots." John shook his head. "What I'd give for some hormonal angst."

"Oh, you say that now," Jaina said, but she was trying really hard not to laugh. "You were snuggled as a bunny?"

John cringed, "By many, many people. It was nice at the time, but really embarrassing in retrospect."

She was still smiling just at the visual. "I'm sorry I missed out. If it helps, I'm sure you were a very good bunny."

"Assuming that's a good thing, thanks," John replied. "So, tell me some awful detail of your life as I've just shared one of mine."

The problem with the actual awful stuff was that it would probably sound very overdramatic and actually awful, thusly making it bad class-date conversation. "Well... I grew up listening to a protocol droid who thought he could tell bedtime stories. Does that count as awful?"

"Droid like robot? Yeah, I think that counts," John allowed with a grin. "What sort of stories did he tell you?"

"The Little Lost Bantha Cub. Over and over. With sound effects. It's a wonder I don't still have nightmares. Though I think I could always choose to blame things on the trauma," she said, mostly joking. Mostly. "So are you from here?"

"Kinda, I think," John said, he wasn't sure how this dimensional thing worked. "I mean, I'm from Earth. But definitely an Earth without dinosaurs or magic."

"I get the impression the planet's pretty normal, but the town is a little on the weird side," she said. "You go outside and it's just a different feeling to it."

"Huh, I hadn't noticed. But then, I haven't been much outside of town." Though, John might not notice if he was living on a hellmouth.

"We could always make it a field trip," she suggested. "Which could be an adventure since I've been outside of here once as a passenger."

"That's not a bad idea. Anyplace you had in mind?" he asked, liking this idea.

"Well, what's the town right outside here? Alexandria?" she said. "I don't know what's big around there, but there've got to be restaurants and things."

"I've heard there's supposed to be neat shops and historical and military landmarks, if you're into that sort of thing," John added, hoping she was.

"Definitely," she said, smiling. "Got a preference on a day?"

"I'm pretty wide open," John smiled back at her. "Other than cheer camp, of course."

"Can't miss that," she said. "Is that happening anytime this weekend?"

"It seems rather pervasive," his eyes widened a bit on the last word. "I heard there's a water fight on Saturday, but I think they gave us some time to be un-cheery afterwards."
