Practical Applications Period 5 Week 7

The danger shop was a particularly horrid shade of pink. All John could do was vary it between lightish red and Pepto Bismal vomit.

"Okay, kids, here's the deal. You've got about half an hour to finish things up and then take these babies for a test drive. I've made notes on the vehicles where I think they need to have a bit of improvements...mostly just a few gussets here and there, which should take you no time to weld on. Wheels are mostly parallel, for our purposes, and the seats and restraints and steering and all that? Good. Y'all get an A. Or passing. Whatever the hell the grades are."

He clapped his hands. "So. Have fun, wear the welding masks while welding, no shoving anyone into the wall on the turns, and have fun!"

The Danger Shop had a smaller than usual workshoppy area, as the rest was taken up by a go-kart course set up in a figure 8 with a bridge. It may be changed as soon as he figures out how to make things not-pink. Even the Bea Arthur poster was pink.

He's talkative. Voice concerns that you did not properly learn enough tig or mig welding. Marvel at his beast of a go-kart, powered by a 9 HP pressure washer motor.

Because what would Shop be without TA?

Naomi was there. She wasn't a very happy Naomi given what had happened earlier (http://umbitch.livejournal.com/6185.html?thread=751657#t751657) that day but she was still there if she was needed. Provided that no one actually needed her help in picking things up.

John wandered over to his TA to ask her help in tweaking something on his go cart. Shut up, it wasn't nitrous. It was... a... fire extinguisher. Yeah. "Naomi, can you help me for a minute?"

"Um...sure," she said, hoping that she would actually be able to.

John wasn't exactly paying attention to her fingers. "Can you hand me that wrench?" he said, pointing with his head. "Trying to put this back together and I can't reach it. You excited about today?"

Naomi nodded, "yeah," she said. Well she had been able to eventually pick up the data PADD, maybe she'd actually be able to do this. She went to pick up the wrench but her fingers refused to comply, frustrated after several attempts at trying she said a few swear words in Ktarian.

John manages to get the thing together, sticking his tongue out because, as everyone knows, sticking out your tongue makes it work better. "Hah! Got it." He heard her say something. "Nomers? You okay?" He looked at her hands. "Holy crap, what happened? You okay?"

Naomi sighed, "Umbridge," she said quietly.

"What. did. she. do?!" he asked, balling his hands into fists.

"She called me a liar and did something with that wand of hers," she said softly, "I've had problems with picking up things since then,"

John swore to make sailors blush. "Can you do anything about it? Can I? I don't know if my chi stuff would help any."

"I don't know enough about magic to be able to stop it," Naomi sighed, "I think the only thing I can do is wait until it wears off, if it wears off that is,"

John thought for a minute. "Do you want me to try the chi stuff? It shouldn't hurt, and I'd hate to have my TA incapacitated on the last day. Or any day. Who's going to point out when I screw up?" he said, trying to make her laugh.

"I don't know if it will help but I guess it's worth a try," Naomi said quietly.

"Okay. I'll take your hands in mine, and try to see if I can sense anything."

He held his hands out, palm up, closing his eyes to center himself. "C'mon, John, you can do this. Just like the healing thing," he muttered under his breath.

Naomi held out her hands and placed them, palm down, on John's.

John concentrated, tried to see her aura. That didn't work.

He tried again, focusing, trying to see if he could find where her hands had been altered, to see if he could block the block or undo the damage. If he had his eyes opened, his hands would have been glowing a faint blue.

After a minute, he stopped. "Does that do anything for you?"

Naomi glanced at her hands, they didn't look any different, "I don't think it's done anything,"

He sighed. "Well, crap. That's about as much as I can do. It seems to work best for me when I'm really calm or really hurt, and I'm not calm at the moment. I wonder if mom's Howitzer is still on campus? That might fix her problem."

"Howitzer?"

"Cannon. Mounted on a trailer, pulled by a jeep or something. Artillery? That might take care of the problem, y'know?"

"John, that's too dangerous!"

"Hrm. Stick her in there and fire her out, instead?" He grinned. "That'd be great to see."

"I'd like to see that as well but she's too powerful," Naomi said quietly.

"Someone needs to fix that. This is a school, not a dictatorship. And if it's a dictatorship, someone needs to learn what happens when absolute rule doesn't work."

Naomi nodded, "we need Principal Washburn to come back,"

"Yes. She seems to be good at it. Hell, even one of those temp principals would be better. Have people been telling her?"

"I'm not sure," Naomi said, "I don't think she knows what's going on,"

"I think people should tell her. Not sure who, cuz I'm not going to barge in on a new mom and demand she go back to work."

Naomi nodded, "maybe one of the teachers will tell her,"

"I hope all the teachers tell her. And tell the school board. It's just not right what's going on. And there's not a damn thing I can do about it, either." Short of C4, and he'd be willing to bet that someone would be pissed that he didn't invite them.

"Hopefully someone can get rid of Umbridge," Naomi said, "I hope she's gone by the fall semester,"

"I'm sure there's an office pool on that," he said. "I'd guarantee it."

"It wouldn't surprise me if there was one,"

"We should find out. Wanna place a bet?" he asked with a grim smile.

Check the welds, decide on gussets, check the bolts, prep the engine, air up the tires.

If you come during the welding, you must wear protective masks.

If you come for the race from the handwavey posters, go ahead and sit in the stands!

Have a few laps around the danger shop. [insert games here]

Dude. I propose, when we do have Fandom High Con (East Coast version somewheres around D.C. at a hotel that has wireless intarwebs, a good pizza delivery, and a well-stocked bar), we need to have a break where we hit up a mini-golf and gocart track. More racing possibly this weekend.
