Study Hall -- Wednesday, September 28th

Welcome to Wednesday's study hall. I'm in a considerably better mood than yesterday, which mostly means none of you will be getting set on fire today. I reserve the right to threaten you with it, though. You have no fucking idea how entertaining the looks on your faces are when I do that.

*grins wickedly and takes a drag off her cigarette*

The announcements for today --

-- Biff is missing once again from the front of the teachers lounge. If somebody could find that stupid goddamn bear and drag it back, I'd appreciate it. (I won't be rettaching any limbs you might lose, though. That's your fucking problem, not mine.)

-- After the events of last weekend, I'm thinking of lifting the weapons ban. I'll be opening up a discussion section in the comments for those opposed and those for the weapons ban to hash out any differences they might have, any requests they might have for licensing or policing those who wish to carry their weapons, and any other problems they might wish to discuss.

-- Parents Weekend will take place on October 28th, 29th, and 30th. For the record, you may make one new RPG journal for whichever parent, guardian, relation, or mortal enemy you might wish to bring in for your character. These characters cannot already be enrolled in the school or exist in town, and if you can find someone not already involved in the game to play them just for that weekend, all the better. However, these characters will not be allowed posting access on FH or any related communities, they will only be allowed to comment in designated threads -- open houses for classes, the Halloween dance, etc. They're only here to visit for one weekend, folks -- they won't be hanging in the dorms or taking classes or anything. Also, teachers will be allowed to call parent/teacher conferences with any of their students they might wish to meet with (or any "parent" they might wish to interview ... *snerk*).

(OOC: Also, for the record, I'm not playing John Connor anymore -- I've passed him off to someone else. Now he can get a little more play, the poor antisocial bastard. :))

Kid... we aren't talking about arming ourselves against each other.

This is a measure to make sure students can protect themselves in case of attack by Zombies, Werewolves, Gremlins, Tentacle Demons, Deadites, or whatever.

I'm not guaranteeing there is no possibility of accidents occuring under these proposed plans I'm working on... accidents are inevitable. But if we guarantee things like gun locks, proper visible holsters, and nobody unqualified to handle a weapon actually allowed to carrying one, it'll be a lot safer for everyone.

I understand, coach, and I'm glad to see reasonable discussion with solutions being suggested.

But even in the discussion there is talk of having their guns 'as defense against the magic users'.

Wasn't the reason the weapons ban instituted was because of the rising level of hysteria of having to arm against each other?

If things have changed, that's good. I'm not arguing against doing things to ensure safety. I'm just not conviced that all the students here arguing for the return of their guns are doing solely because of the zombie attack.

And that is what is giving me the most concern. To me, it sounds like we are heading right back to where we started.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

It's a reasonable fear... those with these magicky powers can't be fully disarmed. They are always able to do something to another student, and I bet even faster than it takes to unholster a gun, switch off the safety, aim, and fire.

We'll be offering proper psycho-cological support and screening, to make sure nut jobs aren't given any real leniency when it comes to armaments. And to make sure those who can properly handle a gun continue to properly handle them and not lose control thanks to your stupid teenage angst.

::laughs:: Not that there's a lot of that around here.

We're gonna be taking everything under consideration.

Besides, if it all gets bad, you can fly away, can't ya? ::another hearty laugh::

So far the major threats to the student body have been magic based.

It's not unreasonable or hysterical feel a bit uneasy when you get told the magic wielders aren't facing any extra restrictions but that you have give up your weapons, especially if, as more than a few of us here are, you come from a place were not having a means to protect yourself tends to get you dead, raped, enslaved, or if you're really lucky, all three.

Yes the threats have been magic based. They aren't from the magic using school population though.

I'm not arguing to hold all the guns and let the magic users roam free with no restraint.

My argument is that so far, all the magic users seemed to have been exercising restraint and the weapons users were the ones who were waving their weapons around in shows of bravado, which is why the weapons ban was instituted in the first place.

I'm all for giving the guns back. I'm all for putting rules and restrictions in place to govern magic, weapons, martial arts and the ilk for the safety of the entire population.

I am still concerned about this need to defend ourselves from each other that I'm hearing.

In the end it doesn't matter. Because all I want to see is better accountability and responsibility coming from any 'weapons' owner, be it magical, projectile or philosophy based.

Let me see if I can explain that part a bit better.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but where I'm from? It's brutal, it's violent, and not really that nice a place. My entire village got wiped out by a warlord when I was a child, everyone died. The only reason I survived the last six years was by viewing everything and everyone as a potential threat until proved beyond a doubt to be otherwise.

Now you may argue that that kind of thinking isn't nessecary here, and you might even be right, but the fact remains that I'm not going to be here for the rest of my life, and if I abandon something that's basically a way of life for me because of a temporary safety, I'm dead the pretty much moment I go back home.

I agree with you on the accountability and responsibility part though, being an idiot around weapons is a good way to get yourself, or the people with you killed.

"We agree with Chihaya entirely. So far, we've seen a teacher go completely ballistic because a student was a vampire, when said student hadn't done anything. The teacher went so far as to 'arm' herself, her students, and at least one fellow teacher against said vampire."

Duce shrugs openhandedly.

"I hate to barge in on a conversation- well, no that's a lie. I can see where you're coming from, Duce- I'm not exactly the average human myself. I probably don't need a weapon. But, like Callisto said, I'm used to having one on me. I pretty much have to in real life. And, as far as arming oneself agains Angelus goes, well," she shrugs. "I'm friends with him, and I still understand where some people might want to, say, wear a cross."

I'm so sorry that has happened to you. It is very sad Earthiiiaaahhh-people do bad things to each other.

Then I think we are in agreement here in total. Any irresponsible person wielding a weapon (of any description, magical or mundane) is the biggest threat, the weapon of choice is irrelevant.

I just wish to see the arguments floating around here to be focused on that and not the specifics of one segment of the student population in what is starting to smack of straw man defense, whether it's meant or not.

I heard Coach Ash is putting together a committee of teachers to discuss these issues and maybe try to hammer out a solution that will make everyone happy...and not just one part of the school student body.

((ooc: No debating skill here, just like a good back and forth to discuss issues sometimes and the discussion has been a really compelling one. It doesn't hurt that the character is a really really goody two-shoes nice kid and really is naive in the ways of the world wants to believe in the good of others and have everyone be happy. ^^;))
