Dealing With Stupid People [Tuesday, August 7, 2nd period]

"Today, in a shocking change of pace, we'll deal with even more stupid people," Josh said, waving his hand around the Danger Shop at the simulated Yellow Line Metro stop.

"The combination of just waking up, not wanting to be going to work, not paying attention and being an idiot tourist combine to give Washington, DC some of the most ridiculous morning commutes in the country. You have two choices: You can get on the Metro," he waved his hand over his shoulder towards the station, "where you will have to get yourself a Metro pass, go in the correct direction, transfer through Metro Center, one of the scariest places at 8:15 in the morning known to man, and make your way from there to the Red Line and Farragut North. Which is by the White House and therefore awesome. If you screw up and end up at Farragut West, I will mock you. On this commute, you will encounter tour gaggles of idiot middle schoolers, women with baby carriages who won't move towards the center of the car, and people without enough coffee to be paying attention. You are not allowed to scream or throw things unless they really, really deserve it."

"Or! You can get in one of these handy cars--" he pointed to the provided cars, "get onto I-395, go across the 14th Street Bridge and try to find parking near the White House without getting run over by an illegal cab driver, cut off by someone who thinks merging is a sign of weakness, or exiting at the wrong spot and end up in a giant Pentagon parking lot. At which point I will also mock you."

He clapped his hands together. "Work in teams of two--that gets you into the High Occupancy Vehicle lane on the highway and makes for more entertainment on the Metro. First team to the fake White House gets a real White House tour from me this weekend."

He clapped his hands together. "Don't just stand there like you've wandered off the Greyhound from South Dakota! Move!"

Rodney's hand was clutching the dashboard before they even started moving. "Just because this is a simulation, that doesn't mean you need to be reckless!"

"Relax, Rodney," John said, smoothly. "I won't let anything happen to you." And then the cars wheels spun as they headed out onto the road.

"So, navigator, what road are we looking for?" John casually asked, as the car weaved in and out of lanes around other, slower moving cars.

"Okay, okay," he panted. Thus far, John seemed to be totally in control of the car, so Rodney tried to ease up on his grip a bit. "Weren't you listening to Professor Lyman? We need to be on 395 North to head downtown."

"Right, 395," John exited appropriately onto 395, and continued driving like he was in a race.

"So, McKay, I hear we both had dates with the same girl last week," John waggled an eyebrow.

Rodney flinched a little as they joined the highway traffic.

"Great," he huffed. "There goes any chance I had of a second date with Charlie. She's never gonna look at me again if she can have the..." he gestured at John as he tried to come up with an appropriate description. "Quarterback instead," he finished.

Keeping his eyes on the crowded highway, John chuckled, "Hey, my other date called out of our second date cuz she liked the guy who keeps saying 'breasts' to people, better."

And now they were smack dab in the middle of gridlock.

Since they were no longer going at breakneck speeds, he was able to sit back and give John his full attention. "You had two dates with two different girls in the same week?" Rodney was a little in awe. And a little disgusted.

John looked at Rodney. "I would've had more but I went out of town this weekend," John explained.

"And I'm a captain, not a quarterback." They inched forward in traffic.

Rodney stared. He was actually speechless for a moment. Not a long moment, but still. "Who are you?! Commander Taggart?"

He waved his hand dismissively. "Quarterback. Captain. Whatever. They all just mean 'stereotypical attractive and popular jock-type person.'"

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
John raised an eyebrow, "So you figured me out, then? I'm just a walking jock stereotype?" John was not fond of people making assumptions about him.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, yes?" Rodney said without much confidence. "Though I will admit, you do seem to be a genuinely nice person. What with the tolerating me and all which is not something any of the stereotypical jocks I've ever met have done," he babbled. "I'm sure they're just intimidated by my genius. But you're reasonably intelligent. So again, not all that stereotypical."

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"I dunno, Rodney. What makes you think I won't give you a swirlie first chance I get?" There was a twinkle in John's eye. Traffic moved a bit.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"That right there," he pointed at John. "You wouldn't tease me if you meant to do it. No, you really are a nice guy." Though he would never admit it, Rodney rather liked the teasing. He didn't really have that level of comfort with many people. This just served to prove his point and also remind him of the reason for this conversation.

"So, um, how was your date with Charlie?" He asked hesitantly as they rolled forward.

John changed lanes to get them a little ahead of traffic. "We had a good time mocking a movie and dancing. How 'bout yours?" John asked, thinking maybe Rodney did get him a little bit.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He was pleased that John didn't seem upset with him. And that it didn't sound like there were fireworks on their date. "Damn it, why didn't I think of dancing? We just played pool and talked about... stuff." If John didn't know about Charlie's abilities, Rodney was not going to be the one to tell him. "But it was fun," he smiled fondly.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"You like pool?" John asked, interestedly, thinking if they were friendly they probably shouldn't keep talking about a chick they were both interested in. Even one as cute as Charlie.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh yes, pool's great. It's all just a matter of applied physics, really," he smiled fondly. Again. "You know, if I had any acting ability, I'd make a great hustler," he said smugly.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
John chuckled, "You should show me how's it's done sometime." Not that this was John's way of sucking him in like a shark. Never!

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course. No problem. It's really very simple once you get the basics." Rodney nodded. It was always fun to show off his skills and he didn't think he'd mind teaching someone who was willingly to learn from his wisdom. He really had no clue when he was being played. "Our exit is coming up. The Fourteenth Street Bridge."

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
John took the exit and the went over the bridge. "Cool. I'm always up for learning a new sport. You know, being a great big jock," John smirked.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Naturally," Rodney rolled his eyes. "I'm almost surprised you don't already play."

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Does seeing it on TV count?" John asked, laughing on the inside cuz this was gonna be entertaining.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"No, not as such," he replied. "I can tell you're going to take a lot of work." But that was okay, Rodney was up for the challenge.

Re: Drive!

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
"You'll be my pool sensei, Rodney. Just like in that movie."

John searched for parking, "Let me know if you see any spaces, this city has more cars than parking."

"Right, because I'm just like Tom Cruise," he snorted.

"Keep going, there might be a spot on the next block," he said as he craned his neck to see ahead.
