When the class had filed into the room, D had several tables, each laid out with an egg, each one in a box and swaddled in a blanket for warmth. The room itself, in fact, was overly warm as well, though it didn't seem to bother D any.

"Today we will be looking at dragons," he said. "Or, more correctly, we will be looking at several types of creature which are likely to be called 'dragon', though the name may not be wholly correct in each instance.

"For this exercise, you will split into groups, each with an egg, and then deduce which type of 'dragon' comes out of it." D gestured to where each table had a stack of books on it. "Those will help you to figure it out, as long as you look carefully. Please be very gentle, but know that dragons, even small ones, can bite."

[OOC: Split up into groups of three, if you please. The egg will begin to hatch as soon as someone touches them and each comment will give a clue as to what type it is. OCD is ~~coming~~ up.

"Priceless too, if it was a fire breathing dog," Cedric said.

"You'd go through a lot of postmen though."

"They'd probably deserve it," Cedric said, looking back at the egg. "Touch it. I'm ready in case it explodes or oozes goo."

"Right," Jo nodded, and gently poked the egg with her forefinger.

Cedric watched intently, waiting for a full grown dragon to leap from the egg.

"That was a little anti-climatic, don't you think?" Jo asked softly, still watching the egg.

The egg finally chimed and wobbled in place a little, a spider-webbing of cracks spreading across its surface.

"It just needed time to wake up," Cedric said, pointing at the cracks.

Jo nodded, and watched. "What do you think it'll be like?"

"Shiny," Cedric said immediately. "And...lots of white teeth." He could almost see it as a dragon version of Gilderoy Lockhart.

The cracks spread and shards of egg shell began to fall like sequins, chiming softly as they hit the tabletop. A tiny paw poked out of a hole and waved frantically.

"It's so tiny, and musical if the shell's any indication," Jo said, and leant across to Cedric. "Maybe we're supposed to help it?"

"Help it by...singing?" Cedric guessed. "Or open the egg for it?"

"Know any songs a dragon might like?" Jo asked. "Except I'm not sure whether it needs someone to help it out, or it needs to get on its own. Hard without a guide."

"Hello little dragon," Cedric sang. It wasn't a song, just words. "Come on out and play. If you do we'll...show you the way!"

Seemingly encouraged, the paw pushed at the shell and pieces fell away, but slowly. A delicate, blue-skinned nose joined the paw to force it open further.

A rather large part of Jo was internally going 'SQUEE' right now. "C'mon little dragon, don't be afraid, we're only here to lend you some aid."

Jo kinda sucked at rhymes.

"We're nice and friendly and full of good cheer," Cedric added. "Come out and see us and we'll keep you away from beer."

Cedric kinda sucked too.

"At least until you've reached the age of majority in whatever state we happen to be in at the time," Jo added. "Trust us, it'll be just fine."

The hole became larger and the paw withdrew, replaced shortly by a serpentine face with very large eyes. The creature chirruped at them in greeting.
