How to Blow Things Up - Week 4, Period 1

Aly had set up the main campfire with an assortment of bombs running the field from the classic bombs used in movies to less sophisticated devices. 

She waited for everyone to arrive then started speaking.  "The last few classes, we've talked about how to blow things up.  Which is, admittedly, a lot of fun and also what the class is about.  Today, however, we're going to talk about what happens when you don't want the bomb to go off.  Disabling explosives is a hugely dangerous task, and in general, it's something you want to call in an expert to deal with."  She grinned.  "But really if there's one thing Fandom teaches you it's that when you need an expert, one usually can't be found.  So today we - and by we, I mean you - are going to work on disarming explosive devices that won't cause quite so much agony is you get it wrong."

Gesturing to the assortment of bombs,  she started discussing bomb disposal techniques including the use of a pigstick because I love this word and the ever-popular cutting of the correctly coloured wires.

"Now the trick here is that these devices aren't bombs.  But if they are disengaged incorrectly, they will explode."  She grinned.  "I hope you wore clothes that can get paint on them.  If not -" she pointed to a box "-there are some lovely and very fashionable smocks to put on."

"If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  Otherwise, pair up and have fun."

Pair up with someone and disarm the bombs - What colour wire should be cut first? Should you try the pigstick?

As you're working, I'll ping into threads occasionally to mod your bombs. Because sometimes, you can do everything right and it still just blows up.

Neil gave Setsuna a friendly smile and a hapless shrug.

"Shall we give it a shot?"

Setsuna nodded, figuring that Neil looked....capable enough. She wondered if maybe the fact that he seemed to resemble Dr. Wilson lent him to being considered as such.

"I suppose. Most of my dismantling techniques had been magical, so this...could be interesting. Do you have any experience in these methods?"

"Not with bombs specifically," Neil admitted. "But I had a lot of experience in picking locks and other sneaky hand eye coordination type activities when sneaking around Welton."

He smiled and then held up his notebook which was covered in very detailed notes.

"And I have notes! Lots of notes."

River gave Animal a suspicious look, but decided to give him a chance. "That is not for eating," she said.

Annette was there, ready and willing to disengage a bomb. She really wanted to use the pigstick too, just so she could say the word.

Johnny took a scan of the class and saw that Annette was the closest free person. He headed over towards her.

"Ready t'blow somethin' up?" he asked.

"Hey, Johnny, and noooo, no blowing up!" She grinned. "Disengage properly, yes." Which probably meant Annette would end up covered in paint.

"Right. Course, if there's more than one red wire in the bomb, 'm not gonna know which one to cut."

As he was saying this, he stripped off his leather jacket, and carefully folded it up in an out of the way corner. Jeans and t-shirts could be easily replaced, but leather was expensive, and he'd rather not get exploded paint on it.

Evie smocked up, because she knows herself *just* well enough to think something might possibly you-never-know go wrong.

"Ooo. Blue, or red?" She stared at the wires in fascination, trying to make a decision. "Blue. No, red!"

Then she went back to thinking again.

Evie blinked, and said. "Splendid idea!"

She cut both wires...

SPLUUUTT!

..and ended up covered in shiny gold pain. "Um."

Sokka looked over at Evie with a sigh, disappointed that she already had a partner.

Then his usual confident charm flipped on, and he grabbed a smock and sauntered up to Luke. "Ready to give this a shot?" he asked.

"Sure," Luke said with a bright smile. "I normally do this kind of stuff by feel, though, not instruction manuals."

Sokka grinned at him. "Exactly! If you can't trust your gut, you can't trust anything, right? You should help me explain that to my sister."

He looked over the bombs. "For example, I'd say that... this one would be the easiest to disarm." No, it wasn't.

Inara pulled on a smock and reviewed her notes against the bomb while she waited for a partner.

Z was also wearing a smock, as she didn't have so many uniforms she could go around ruining one. "Hi," she said to Inara. "Do you need a partner?"
