Seimei was sitting at his table when class started. The blue butterfly flitted around the classroom to draw attention to the scroll stretched across the front of the blackboard.

Discussion question –

The Japanese at the Heian court began to develop a culture independent of the Chinese culture that had formed the cultural life of imperial Japan up until that point. Name two developments that came from this cultural independence.

Despite having done the reading, the only thing Wednesday could remember off the top of her head was the divergence in the written language, and she spent the rest of the class refreshing her knowledge.
