Dealing With Stupid People [Tuesday, July 24, 2nd period]

Instead of telephones, the students in Josh's workshop would find laptops set up.

And coffee, naturally.

"For some reason, people think that because they're hiding behind a keyboard, they're not accountable for what they say," Josh began, taking a sip from his mug. "That's clearly stupid. There are entire websites devoted to mocking such stupidity--not that I've ever gone to them, of course--and I'm sure those of you more technically minded will help out your fellow students from less advanced civilizations."

Josh clapped his hands together. "Because today, you are starting flamewars. If you're looking for suggestions, the Barry Plodder people have been chock full of crazyflakes."

He then gave a brief--well, for him--explanation of flamewars, with tangents about Fox News, the Republican party and the general evil of people who put up websites about Bartlet and can't be bothered to learn how to spell his last name correctly, then let them loose on the internet.

Heaven help 'em.

Faile stared at the machine and wished for a knife with which to stab it. It was either that or cry and stabbing was definitely the less embarrassing option.

Charlie took a moment to come up with an ID, then went to work.

Door pokes around a few of the Plodder discussion boards -- keeping in mind that she hasn't even read the first one yet, let alone the seventh then posts in all caps, bold font: I READ THE LAST PAGE! JOHN DIES!

She has no idea if there's a John.

Savannah looked entirely too gleeful about this assignment.

That could be a bad thing.

"Anyone ever told you how scary you are when you look like that?" Eve said, scooting over so she was next to Savannah.

Savannah grinned at her. "Oh, only several hundred times." She pointed to the screen. "Did you know Bryce hangs out here?"

Mel just glares at the computer screen for the longest time. She really doesn't want to be here today.

Finally she just logs into a message board site and types in the following:

"Do you people really spend all day bitching about movies, books and special effects? Get off yer fat asses and get a life."

Peter thought about what to write.

I didn't feel the last book was very strong.

Peter wasn't good at starting flamewars.

Gavin decided to write back.

Maybe you should go crying to your mom.

If Gavin only knew whose mother he was talking about.

A.J. had gotten as far as making a username (the.artist; truly, so creative) and he thought he was in the chatroom, too, but wasn't....sure. The internet had....gotten....different in the past twelve years.

And what the hell was Barry Plodder? He bit his lip and threw himself out there.

the.artist: hi?

A.J. totally won at the interwebs, oh yes.

I know you are, but not am I.

Yeah, it's the best Charlie can come up with.

Rodney thought about writing an entire essay on why people who don't believe in evolution obviously aren't the product of it, but he was feeling lazy. Instead, he went with:

PLODDER STINKS!!!

Simple, but effective. It wasn't until after he'd hit 'send' that he realized it might give away the fact that he had actually read the books.

Sokka shrugged and went around to various places replying to random comments with some variation on "That's the stupidest thing I ever heard! What are you, some kind of moron?"

TONE DOWN THE SPOILERS! Geez. That's as bad as revealing the Underbridge/Filth date scene.
