Redemption: What a Crock [Monday, period 6]

There was no one there to teach Ares' class today. The students were probably wondering why they'd bothered to show up, might even have been thinking about leaving, when Karal came wandering past.

He knew it was Ares' class. He'd made a point of being aware of the activities of the false god, and his absence was too good a chance to pass up. He would be failing in his duty as a Priest if he didn't seize every opportunity to help others see Ares as he truly was.

"Hello," he said, trying not to sound shy as he made his way to the front. "My name is Karal, and I am a Priest of Vkandis Sunlord. This is Altra." The Firecat jumped up onto a convenient bench and nodded regally. "As Ares is not here today, I will be speaking to you. I understand that this class is about why redemption is a foolish concept. Today I would like you to talk about why this is wrong.

In my world, there are stories, tales of the power of redemption, of the good effects it can have. I think it would be interesting if everyone in the class could briefly talk about a story from their world which is about redemption. It can be a children's tale, a novel, a movie or a television show," he only stumbled over those last two a little bit, "or even something you've actually experienced."

He looked down at Altra, who snorted and nodded. "I think it would also be a very worthwhile exercise to make a list of five reasons why you believe Ares is not a god. I am sure he will be amused by them when he returns next week."

[ooc: Poor Ares-mun's keyboard has been infected with QWERTYitis. Please wait for OCD is up! FYI, Karal is wearing his Priest's robes.]

Luke wasn't so much talking as staring with his mouth gaping open.

Once he got over the shock, Luke decided this was the best thing that had happened to the class so far.

He was there for anyone to talk to.

After thinking for a while, Luke finally told a story that he'd seen on a holodrama. Really about a Jedi who had turned to the Dark Side of the Force, done horrible things, and had finally fought his way back--with the help of his family, naturally--to the light.

Dick was thoroughly amused. Whether it was over Karal hijacking the class or over what Ares was going to do to Karal when he found out was anybodys guess.

Jeff hadn't really been in the talking mood since this morning. He just shot Karal a desperate look on his way in and stayed quiet.

Lana enjoyed Karal's taking over the class very much. It was a nice change.

It took Jeff a few moments, but eventually, he managed to launch into a tale of adultery, revenge, and death. It seemed perilously close to the plot of The Charge of the Woman 30 Metres Tall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_50_Foot_Woman).

Oddly enough, he skipped over any bits that didn't involve the woman in question.

1. Gods shouldn't have facial hair like that. Actually, nobody should.
2. He would have killed Karal by now if he was a God.
3. Teaching? He's a God and he's happy with a teacher's salary? I don't think so.
4. Weren't those Gods into dudes? Why hasn't he taken me a strapping young dude for his own? Obviously not a God.
5. I have the feeling Zoe could kick his ass. Badass as she is, Zoe couldn't kick a God's ass.

Lana didn't know how good an idea making a list like that was. It was entirely too likely that Ares was a god so she thought perhaps discretion was the better part of valor here.

Lana told a totally handwavey story because the mun is totally braindead about how the love and support of friends turned the life of a young man around.

Henry agreed with what Karal was saying, and admired him for getting in front of the class to say it.

Re: Talk about a story

Henry chattered excitedly about Les Malheureux, a novel he'd read in foreign language class. It told the tale of Claude Declaude, a convict whose life was changed by the utter selflessness of one Bishop. After that, Declaude broke parole to leave his old life behind and do good. Wherever he went, Inspector Jacond was there to try to throw Declaude back in jail. But Declaude knew that he was a changed man, and never felt malice toward Jacond for doing his job.

Henry took a breath. It was a really long story.

Henry's first three reasons had to do with his own religious preferences. But he did feel a little mischevious, and finished with:

4. His pretension ill-befits a god.

5. Such a being should undoubtably have convinced me, by this present point, to agree with him regarding his stance on redemption. Yet, his attempts have struck me as rather unsuccessful.

He grinned to himself. Henry thought his comments had zing. He left the paper unsigned.

Andrew frowned. Whatever this guy in front of the class was saying didn't really register. He had really been looking forward to seeing his normal professor. Ares just had such admirable pants style.

Andrew wasn't a fan of this assignment, so instead he came up with two different lists on his own.

List one: Five reasons why priest robes shouldn't be worn in public.
List two: Five reasons why tight pants command respect.

Five reasons Ares could be a god.

1. He says he's a god.
2. He has an amazing amount of hair.
3. He's fairly intimidating.
4. I bet he could get people to kneel before him.
5. I wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

John thought his list was both practical and believable.
