Intro to Anthropology

Hello and welcome to the first Introduction to Anthropology course. Sign-ups are still open until next Wednesday, September 14th. We only have 6 people with a maximum of 30, so make sure to recruit people.

For your first class, I would like you to go around the room, introduce yourself. Tell us your name, your year, your major, where you live, and any countries you've visited other than your home country.

Because I didn't post a formal syllabus, I shall post it now.

Course: AN 101 - Intro to Anthropology (3 Credits)

Instructor: Daniel Jackson - Surrey 316, ext 7522. Office Hours: Tu, Th 9:00-11:00

Course Purpose: To introduce you to the field of anthropology and to give you the necessary skills in order to look at different cultures in an unbiased manner.

Class: Surrey 210, MWF 10:10-11:00

Required Material: The books are on backorder, but I have just been informed some of them have arrived in your campus bookshop. We will be reading Studies in Anthropology by Theresa Patricks, 1st Ed., 2003, African Tribes by Richard Mayhem, and Post-Communist China by David Pullman.

Grading: This class will be graded as follows: Final(25%), Two exams(15% each), Homework(15%), In-Class Assignments (15%), Class Participation (15%)

Make-Up Policies: You are expected to attend each class, especially those with exams. Please see me if you are not going to be able to attend an exam, and we shall make the necessary accomodations.

Please arrive to class on time. Turn off any cell phones to avoid distractions. Please come to class prepared and having read the readings. All reading will be posted at my website, so check it each day to find out what your homework is.

Now that we have that taken care of, I shall let you break early from class. Please read the first chapter of Studies in Anthropology and be prepared to discuss it in class on Friday.
