John paced the front of the room, and gave a quick overview of shop safety. Wear the shop glasses, don't light gas on fire, no firing up the engines without warning other people, and so forth.

"H'okay, you three. Last week was kinda an intro class. Lotsa talking, not much action. This week? Action. Here's the deal: you need to pick an engine, diagnose the problem, and repair it. Probable problems will be a bad spark plug, dirty carb, or a broken part. Or all three. Could be something more severe, like overheating, cracked block, ring job, new pistons." He thunked three small-engine manuals on the table.

"It may not be for whatever engine you choose, but it's got the basics, and they've got a good step-by-step on troubleshooting. Diagnosis. Disassembly. Reassembly."

He pointed to a pile of parts on a side table. The table was chartreuse, as was every other frickin' thing in the shop aside from the engines and the parts, as they were not part of the Danger Shop but real. "This is a pile of crap for your engines. Carb rebuild kits, valve kits, ring job kits, cylinder hone kits, et cetera, et cetera. Tools are on the wall," he said, pointing to the lovely green toolboxes with sickeningly green tools (blasphemy!) "and if you need anything, I'll be here. So. Questions?"

After class Naomi came up to speak with John, "hey," she said.

"Hey, yourself. What's up?"

"Not a great deal," Naomi replied, "it's been a pretty quiet week,"

"Always good to hear. No dinosaurs for you?" he asked with a smirk.

"I managed to avoid them," Naomi said, "I spent most of the weekend in the library helping with the research,"

"Wiser course of action than trying to take them on singularly," he said. "Kinda dumb to do."

"I figured that it'd be more useful if I helped with research," Naomi replied, "I wanted to avoid ending up in the clinic,"

"As did I. I hated ending up in the clinic every other day for stupid crap. Jeez, and the time I broke my leg! Sucked for weeks!" he smiled.

"I definitely try and avoid being in the clinic if I can," Naomi replied.

"If you need help, find me. I'll make sure you're clinic-less. How's things been since I've been gone?" he asked.

Naomi nodded, "things have been going okay,"

"That's good to hear. I'm... not mucking up the class too much, am I?" He looked a bit sheepish.

Naomi smiled, "you're not mucking the class up,"

He smiled like the big dork he is. "That's good to hear. Y'know, I'm still in need of a TA for this class..."

Naomi nodded, "yeah I know,"

"I was planning on having a duel in the junkyard for the best engine. OR something, but... Dinosaurs." He shrugged his shoulders. "So..."

"So...?"

"...You still interested?" He was trying not to smile.

Naomi nodded, "I'm still interested," she said with a smile.

"Then you got the job," he said, looking over her shoulder at the rest of the class ~~where A.J. was covered in gas and oil and Dib was poking his engine with a screwdriver (notdirty?)~~. "It comes with perks. Access to the better handwash. Lovely set of mechanic's overalls. Access to the TA Lounge." He smiled.

Naomi smiled, "sounds great," she said.

"Just don't go all being Braggy McSNootypants, else I'll have to appoint the other two as something, too." He eyed the other two. What were they doing?

"Don't worry I won't do anything like that," Naomi said.

"Good!" he said, giving her a manful chuck on the arm. "Now, your first order of business as TA is... to... um. Make next week's class not so pastel?" he said, waving at the chartreuse-ness.

"Not so pastel?"
