Dealing With Stupid People [Tuesday, July 17, 2nd period]

When the students arrived in the Danger Shop, they found the room decorated as an incredibly soulless phone center.

"Welcome to the help desk!" Josh said, grinning proudly. "People are very stupid over the phone, especially when they know you can't see the expression on their faces. This is also why video conferences aren't as popular as regular conference calls--hiding your eyerolling is easier when, well, they can't see your eyes."

He waved his hands out. "Today you will be manning a help desk. I have handwavily put out posters to let people know that it's open during this class time, so the phones should start ringing any minute now. Your job is to answer the person's question in the most polite way possible without letting them know you think they are completely out of their minds."

"Coffee, muffins and bagels are available, answering their questions correctly is completely optional." Josh smirked. "Have fun."

[OOC: Phone lines are open for townies, students, and faculty members to call in. Josh has conveniently forgotten to specify what kind of help the students would offer. Ask for relationship advice, song requests, technical support, people to vote for or against bills in Congress, just to say hi...go nuts.]

Andrew was sitting around his room. He had taken down one of the posters and had been picking up and putting down the phone all morning. He felt like he should talk to someone, and strangers were best for these sort of things...

"Help Desk," Peter said as he picked up the phone.

"Hi. Um. Hello."

"Hi. How can I help you?"

"Well, you see, there is this game I'm playing -- an online role playing game. And I've kind of hit an important crossroads between the levels. The only problem is, I have no clue what to do next. Can you help me out?" There was true concern and worry in his voice.

"Sure," Peter said. "What's the crossroads?"

"Thanks the gods!" Andrew sounded truly relieved. "Well, I have to cross through a portal, the Eye of Iridune, and face off with the evil wizard Mertok. Now, Mertok is at least at fourteenth level wizard, and I'm pretty sure his right hand minion, Blothfar, a Paladin of Ithkgar -- also fourteenth level -- is going to be with him. Not to mention a hand full of one or two hit die assorted creatures." Deep breath. "The problem is, I can only take three members of my party through the portal. I know that my character, Blaine, a seventh level swashbuckler, has to go, and I'm pretty sure the cleric of the party needs to come along, because, let's face it, who in their right mind would go up against an evil Paladin of Ithkgar without some positive plane channeling capability on their side?"

Andrew really seemed to be waiting for an answer...

"Wouldn't you want to save the cleric for healing afterwards?" Peter asked.

There was a pause.

"I've thought about that. But you see, there is no guarantee that we'll be able to get back through the portal again for nearly a full day once the battle is done. So if we don't bring the cleric with us, he won't be able to heal anyone! And what happens if someone gets hit by shade touch or sapping strength? They could die if it's not treated in a matter of moments! And I happen to know that shade touch is one of the spells Mertok prepares every day." Again a pause. "But I could probably purchase enough potions to cover all those possibilities... I would have to sell off my plus two crossbow and all of the frostbite arrows I purchased, and probably the boots of jumping -- they never come in useful anyway. Oh, and there is Phadera's war fans of fire lust... she could part with those without doing much damage to her attack bonus..." This last bit, was spoken pretty much to himself.

"Sounds like you've got a solid plan," Peter said.

Andrew didn't hear him. "That opens the whole thing wide up. If I take the rogue, that will almost definitely lead to a flanking bonus... then there is the loyalty feat with the noble sword mage..."
