[Creatures of Nature - 5th Period, 7/16]

D met with the students in a classroom this time, directing them to tables around the room. At the head of the class, he had a great many cages, each with an animal of some type inside, all of them different.

"Good afternoon, class, and welcome to the second session of Creatures of Nature," he began. "Today's lesson will be an ongoing one, and though the workshop is meant to focus on the animals in nature - meaning those that are not domesticated and that you may not generally come into contact with - I would like to have you each take care of something in order to impress upon you how animals are to be respected and cared for in a more intimate way."

He paused, looking thoughtful. "...Hopefully not too intimate."

Clearing his throat, D began to pass out slips of paper to each student. "You are now assigned these animals until the end of this workshop. You will take them back to your room, care for them, and at the end, you will bring them back to me and we will see how you have done with them. Have fun! And if there are problems, I urge you to come to me."

[OOC: I'm braindead for class-writing, so

turtle_toughguy suggested this. Yes, your character gets a pet even if you have one already. You can try to argue though, if you feel you have to.

You may assume that your pet comes with the basics - food and water (that your character will have to replenish), shelter, and a cage/enclosure of modest size. ~~Wait for~~ OCD is done! omg i am going to bed for a couple hours now, bye. Mod your pets, if'n you please.]

From over by the tarantula tank, Sabriel threw him a slightly jealous look. She knew what to do with rabbits. Tarantulas on the other hand...

Raph glanced back at Sabriel when he noticed. He shrugged at her, having no idea what to do with 'pets' in general, be they four, eight or two legged.. or more or less, for that matter...

"Do you know what you'll call yours yet?" Sabriel asked. For some reason she couldn't quite picture Raphael with a pet called something like Flopsy or Bunny.

"Uhm... No? I was thinkin' I'd name it after somebody in a book I like, maybe? I got no clue. I'm not exactly sure about this whole 'pets' thing." He glanced at the rabbit, then back at Sabriel. "Maybe just 'Tiny', cos that's what it is."

He glanced over at Sabriel's pet and tried not to make a face. Spiders looked too much like things that would mutate so he'd have to fight them later. "Any ideas for your... critter?"

Sabriel looked down at her new pet as well. "I don't know. Perhaps John or Peter. They seem to be common names here, so it'll fit in."

She thought most of the names here sounded funny, and/or like something you'd name a pet.

Raph blinked a little. "Peter's good... I like Peter."
He hadn't thought of anything like that, himself. Now with the idea of typical 'people' names in mind, he had the perfect name.

"Now that ya mention common names, I got the perfect name... I'll call the rabbit 'Leo'." He smirked, seeming utterly pleased with himself for some reason.

"I'll name it Peter John," Sabriel decided, smiling back. She couldn't tell whether the tarantula approved or disapproved of it's new name, but she decided that the leg twitch was a sign of happiness at getting a name.

"Leo is a nice name. Does it mean anything special?"

The corner of Raph's mouth twitched up in another smirk at the apparent exchange betwee Sabriel and 'Peter John'. "You can call him PJ for short, or somethin."

Raph glanced back at the bunny, still feeling very pleased. "Leo's short for Leonardo. S'one o' my brothers." He sunk a bit lower to be less threatening to the rabbit. "It'n that right, lil' Leo?"

Oh yes.. so pleased with himself.

"That's a nice gesture," said Sabriel, obliviously.

Raph nodded. "I'm sure he'll love it." To himself he thought 'If he ever comes home, and if I ever tell him about it.'

'Leo' the rabbit seemed to be getting used to him being there, and had begun to move around his cage again. Raph decided it was as good a time as any to try petting it and reached into the cage slowly.

Secretly, he was rather glad he hadn't ended up with the tarantula, or any other creepy crawlies.

Sabriel watched Raphael trying to pet Leo, and then eyed PJ skeptically. He certainly didn't look pettable. He looked more likely to bite her and kill her horribly or something equally nice.

She gave the tank a brief pet though, in case PJ was feeling left out. She'd have to look up the species in the library to make sure she was treating it right.

"Have you dealt with rabbits before?" she asked Raphael.

"Nah. Truth be told? I don' know much of anything about takin' care of pets." He pulled his hand out of the cage after a few strokes, not wanting to freak the poor rabbit out anymore than he had to. "Why? Have you?"

Sabriel nodded. "Some of the girls in the lower years keep rabbits as pets." She raised her eyebrow. "Sometimes more than actually intended."

Raph smirked. "I'm guessin' the comparison 'breeding like rabbits' is appropriate, then." He looked into the cage at his own rabbit and cocked an eyebrow. "I.. ah.. wouldn't mind a hand... Y'know, if you wanna come say hi to Leo.."

No, asking for help with his bunny wasn't embarassing at all! Why do you ask?

"I would love to come by and say hi to Leo," Sabriel grinned, politely not noticing any kind of possible turtle-y embarrassment. She patted PJ's tank again. "Would you mind trying to help me find out what to do with PJ? I don't want to accidentally kill him by feeding him the wrong thing."

Raph nodded and shrugged. Seemed like a fair trade to him (and he was pretty relieved not to have his embarassment pointed out. Points for Sabriel).

"I'll prob'ly ask my brother to look stuff up for me. I can have him look up info on Tarantulas too. He's pretty quick with a computer, so it shouldn't take too long... I don't think, anyway. You could always come back with me, or just lemme know where I should leave the information for ya."

It was Sabriel's turn to look a little embarrassed. "I am not quite ready for computers yet. They seem very complicated. I was just going to see if the library had any books..."

Raph grinned and shrugged, not seeming to find that a problem.

"Don't worry. I don't really do computers either. Too much to fuss around with. I just say 'Donnie, look this up' and he does the thing that makes the computer go... If he's feelin' gracious, anyway, and maybe if I say 'please'. If he won't help us we'll hit the books together. How's that?"

Sabriel thought about it, then nodded, smiling again. "If I don't have to do anything with the computer, it sounds good. Oh, and I'm in room 219. If you need to leave me a message or something," she added, once she realized she was inviting a man to her room.

A man turtle, yes, but still a man.

Her teachers at Wyverley would definitely not approve.

He nodded, trying to commit 219 to memory for later. "Sure thing. easy enough. I can probably get him to print somethin' out for ya so you'll have something solid t'look at, and not just some scratchy notes written out by him, or worse me."

He was going to have to remember to talk nicely to Donnie, possibly to the point of even saying please and thank you. If he could manage not to argue with his brother it'd probably make things easier.

Sabriel snickered and nodded back. "That sounds great, yes." She gave him a bright grin. "I'll let you get to know Leo now."

Raph nodded and rubbed the back of hi sneck. "Yeah..." He looked at the bunny incredulously. "I'll just.. get to know Leo."

He waved vaguely as he tried to figure how how best to go about pulling the bunny from his cage... Or if that was even wise.

If all else failed, he'd just ask Sabriel when he took her the papers.
