Speech Comm

She wears a sharp blue suit and speaks veeery softly and slowly...

201--Trust Me

Good morning gang. Ok, we're working with a theme of trust this week. Last week was influence and persuasion, so this week I'd like you to prep a speech in which you persuade me to trust you. What do you feel trust is all about? Why should I, the biggest chicken on the teaching staff, trust you? In what ways will you persuade me? Keep in mind the appeals to your character, utilizing specific evidence, and appealing to my emotions. Start brainstorming, you can feel free to ask me questions. This will be helpful for those of you involved in these elections we've got going on...politics is all about presenting the information and getting people on your side. You'll present this Thursday, keep it short. 3-5 minutes. Ok, go.

301--Trust Games

*All the desks have been pushed to the back of the class in a heap. There will be no sitting today.*

Morning, guys. OK, first. Someone may have had a reaction to the drinks from yesterday. I just wanted to make it absolutely clear that I didn't do anything that would harm you. If you felt anything, it was just a little lidocaine. These are trust games. Keep that in mind.

Now, yesterday I saw some intereting things. Some of you have real trust issues...and I don't just mean those who refused to drink. Sydney and Chiana probably have very good reasons behind their behavior. However, others in this class, I'm amazed at how readily you trusted me...I understand your situation, really. I'm up here, I have the political power in this classroom. You ought to be able to trust me to keep you safe, and, in theory, teach you something. However, what if I am intentionally misleading you? I clearly wrote on the board NOT to drink what was in the cups before you ever got here. Why did my words convince you otherwise? Hmm...

Ok, moving on.

So yesterday we saw your level of trust regarding me. Today we're going to work on your trust with one another.

Personal space varies from culture to culture. Part of this is how a person is taught to value their body, and part has to do with the environment in which a person was raised. However, all cultures, when faced with a stranger, tend to be wary and will only let people get so close to them. So here's our game for the day. I want you to pair up with someone...anyone. I want you to stand, facing each other, 1 meter apart. You will take turns disclosing personal details...not deeply personal please. Your pet's name, your shoe size...I don't really care, I just don't want this to get more uncomfortable than it will.

Ok, with each disclosure take a step forward. IF you get to physical contact, I want you to hold that for as long as possible. When you become uncomfortable, please feel free to take a step back.

If anyone winds up without a partner, you can use me. *Blinks* I mean I'll be your partner.

Ok, go.

Logan lowers his voice noticeably. "I don't want to be who people expect me to be." He leans forward, touching his forehead to hers.

Rory's voice also drops a bit, and becomes slightly more hesitant.

"I refuse to be the girl people expect me to be," she says softly, tilting her head so that their noses are touching.

Logan's expression is serious for a second, before he decides to ruin the moment. "In third grade, I had a hamster named Clive." He grins, before kissing her briefly.

Rory's torn between laughing and being shocked. She stares at him.

"I'm dating a guy named Logan. Who isn't you," she says, trying not to laugh. She doesn't move forward - mostly because she can't without kissing him again.

Logan grins and winks.

"How unfortunate for me. I'll be sure to call and cancel the wedding planner and caterer I had on hold. Hmm, what else about me? Oh, I make a mean omelet."

He moves his hands to wrap his arms around her waist completely.

Rory does laugh. "I just wanted to make that clear," she says, grinning.

"Um...I once dyed my best friend's hair purple, and then back to her natural color within the space of an afternoon," she says, wrapping her arms more fully around his neck.

"Well that's not really about you... cheater. I... hate broccoli."

Logan moves his right leg to the outside of Rory's left, inching closer still.

Rory smiles. "It's something I did. Not cheating. Do I look like the type who knows how to dye hair correctly? And anyway...I can't cook. At all." She shifts so that her left leg is a smidge closer, and her hip is just barely touching his leg.

"No, you don't look like the type who could dye hair correctly, which is probably why you had to dye it back in the same day, Gilmore. I like bluegrass music, but don't tell the blue-blood family about that one."

He moves his left leg to mirror the position of his right leg.

"Oh no, professor - she's dating someone else with the same name, but definitely not me."

Logan shrugs and disentangles himself from Rory. He winks at her and returns to his desk.

Rory rolls her eyes at his comment, and, still blushing, picks up her things and prepares to leave.

On his way out, Logan stops at Rory's desk.

"Hey, it was nice... trusting you, Gilmore. I'll see you around."

"Bye," Rory says faintly.

She wonders how, moreover if, she's going to explain this to Logan.

Echolls, that is.

Rory reluctantly untangles herself, and, blushing, goes to pick up her bookbag from where she left it.

[ooc: I am having so much fun with this interaction, but I have to go to class. I'll be back around 8:30 EST. Shall we continue this then?]

In any case, it's your move, Huntzberger]
