Construction Site: Tuesday 7/10, all day

Today there's no heartrending choice to make between cleanup and scaffolding. It's all scaffold, all the time. In addition to the usual hats, goggles and gloves, there are also safety harnesses for working on higher levels. No, Xander doesn't care if you think they make you look dorky.

If you're not into heights, though, there's also some re-painting that needs doing at ground level.

"Oh, come on," Bel said, looking at the harness. "I don't need this."

Xander held out a paintbrush and pointed to a ground-floor wall. "Suit yourself. You go up, though, you wear a harness."

No way was Bel disrupting the power of his manly bare chest with a harness.

With half the previous graduate workforce gone, it might be a small ogling pool; then again, it's a new term...

He's here, wearing a relatively unsilly hardhat today.

Hood up over his eyes despite the heat--not that he would have noticed the weather--Anakin walked over to Xander very early that morning.

He stuffed his hands up into the sleeves of his robe and gave Xander a polite nod, every inch the formal, in-control Jedi.

It was an excellent way to hide how he was really feeling.

"I've got some bad news I need to tell you," he began quietly, flipping his hood down.

And there was that little hitch where Xander forgot how to breathe for a second, wondering who or what it was this time. It never seemed to wear off no matter how many times he'd heard someone open a conversation like this, though he'd become a bit better at keeping it from his face over the years.

"Wow, how I didn't miss hearing that phrase," he said, setting down the hammer he was holding and turning to face Anakin properly. "What is it?"

Anakin's eyes--just for a moment--showed how bone-weary he was of having to deliver this kind of news.

He straightened his shoulders and pressed on. "Hamlet died in Denmark a few days ago," he said quietly.

There was no point in sugar-coating things.

The flash of guilty relief that it wasn't one of the names it would break him to hear, Xander shoved away into the murky corner where such things deserved to be shoved.

"How? Are we sure?" He asked because you had to ask, though it was more out of ritual than because Anakin's expression showed any uncertainty about it.

"Poisoned foil blade," Anakin said shortly. "We're sure. His best friend from home told Rikku. There's no reason to think he was making it up."

Sticking to facts was good. It gave him something to focus on.

"Crap," Xander replied just as succinctly, because what else do you say? Just prettier versions of the same thing. "I didn't even see him before he left. Not since his birthday."

"Me either," Anakin said, guilt painted all over his face. "I pretty much suck, huh."

"If I hummed Dueling Banjos here it would be totally lost on you, right?" Xander pulled his hardhat off and ran a hand through his hair. "We didn't know we wouldn't be seeing him again. And it wouldn't suck any less if we had."

"I thought I was going to get a break from doing this," Anakin said quietly. "I've said goodbye to entirely too many good people."

He blew out a breath. "You'll tell Bridge?"

There are exponential values of crap. Xander said several of them, but only in his head.

"Yeah." Which worked as a reply to more than just the question. "I can spare you that one, anyway." For multiple values of you.

Anakin's lips pressed together as he nodded. "Thank you," he said. "I should probably go make some phone calls."

"Thanks for letting me know." Xander didn't envy the job of making those calls.

Anakin nodded again. "It's better in person," he said, then began the slow walk back to his office.

Period.
