Construction Site: Wednesday, 6/20, all day

The heat-wave seems to have broken a bit, but there's still plenty of extra water bottles around the job site, in addition to the usual tools, safety equipment, and building materials including more wood that needs cutting to proper length.

"Great job on the not causing maim-age to self or others so far, guys," Xander says seriously as the day starts. His hardhat is high-visibility lime green today. Just because. "Keep it up. Not half bad on the actual building stuff parts, either."

"Yeah, I can see that," Bel said, trying to be all casual-like.

Twitch.

"Something wrong?" Anders asked innocently.

"No, not at all," Bel lied. Twitch. "Just, you know, a little tired."

"Well," Anders said slowly, "you could probably get a few minutes' nap in before you have to go back to work. Just, you know, get a couple of bites first."

He was gesturing toward the food, but not in a terribly obvious way.

Food. Yes. Change of subject. Yay.

"Yes. Food. Yay," he said, mouth echoing his brain.

"You sure you're okay?" asked Anders. "The heat isn't getting to you? You seem kind of out of it."

"Heat doesn't really bother me," Bel said. "Perks of growing up in the Underworld."

Anders scooted over slightly to lean against him. "Least you got some good stuff out of it, huh?" he asked quietly. "Not all downsides like . . . getting it beat out of you when you tried to express yourself."

He might have sounded slightly pissed off about that.

"Yeah," Bel said, his shoulders slumping a little as he leaned against Anders. "There's a lot of things I wish I could forget about that part of my life."

Anders pulled him into a hug. "I know," he replied. "I wish I could help with that. Hell, if I had any kind of abilities at all, I'd kick some ass for you."

"You're not going anywhere near the Underworld ever again," Bel said. "No way I'm gonna let you get hurt."

"Hey, if somebody tries to drag you back there, no way in hell am I just letting that slide," Anders insisted stubbornly. "That happens, I'm going after you."

"Hopefully that's not gonna happen," Bel said. "I don't think most of the Underworld understands what went down with the Source. That'll probably make them keep their distance."

"Hopefully," Anders said. "But if it ever does . . . I'm not leaving you there. I went after you once and I'd do it again."

"Don't do anything stupid for me," Bel said. "Or I'll kick your ass."

Anders snorted. "I'd rather have you alive and around to be able to kick my ass, dork."

"Wouldn't you rather I do something else to it?" Bel said slyly.

"Well, yeah, duh, but that still means you have to be alive and not in the Underworld," Anders said. He hugged Bel again, abruptly. "Not losing you that way, not again. Not gonna let it happen."

"Thanks," Bel said, slipping his arm around Anders. "I'm not gonna let it happen, either."

"You better not." Anders leaned over and kissed him. "If you do, I'm totally going after you just to kick your ass."

"Like to see you try," Bel snorted.

"Believe me." Anders poked him in the ribs again. "Under those circumstances I will frakking find a way!"

Bel squirmed, because, hey, ticklish. "Stop that!" he said.

Being slightly evil himself sometimes, Anders kept up the tickling for just a couple more seconds. "If that ever happens again, I could go after you just to tickle you half to death for it . . ."

Bel flailed. "I'll . . . I'll . . . I'll steal your cupcakes!"
