Construction Site: Monday 6-18: All Day

The usual safety gear and tools are set out, but today instead of bricks to lay not dirty there are stacks of wood that need to be cut.

"Yeah, I'm letting you use the sharp objects today," Xander says with a small smile, proceeding into a rather extended and handwavy safety lecture. And then there's no smile. "Screw around near them and you'll be outta here so fast your ass'll give off sparks when it hits the sidewalk."

"Well that's no fun," Mel said with a mock-bored tone. "I came here for the dismemberments."

"Maybe next week?" Xander said apologetically. "...if we get invaded by d-words that need dismembering."

"Zuko," Mel said using his name like a swear word. "He's a jerk."

"A jerk in the I should buy you a Twinkie Split Sundae with extra hot fudge sauce way, or a jerk in the I should call home and round up nine or ten extra Slayers to come help kick his ass way?" He offered both options with equal seriousness.

Mel takes her time considering the options.

"The first one," she says grudgingly. "Thought I reserve the right to choose the second one at any time."

"So noted." Xander nodded. "Anything I can do? Aside from ice cream?"

Mel gave a huff of frustration and shook her head. "Not unless you can explain the mysteries of a man's mind to me."

Xander raised an eyebrow. "Well, I might get drummed out of the union for revealing official secrets, but I could give it a shot..."

"Well I don't want you to cross the union," Mel replied. "At this point maybe ice cream is my best bet."

"I think I could at least get away with revealing that ice cream also works on guys," Xander offered.

"I don't think he's an ice cream kind of guy. Actually I don't think he likes anything," Mel smirked.

Xander frowned thoughtfully. "Everybody likes something. Have you tried him on Twinkies?"

"He only likes himself. And firebending," Mel replied. "I thought he liked me but I guess I was wrong."

"Then he's an idiot." Xander was fully aware that in certain situations this was synonymous with 'he's a guy and he's breathing' but in this one, it seemed worth saying anyway.

"Yeah. Pretty much," Mel shrugged. "Nothing I can really do about it. How are things with you and Bridge?"

Xander tried not to look nervous. He had a whole month to get progressively more and more freaked out in, right? "We're, uh, going to visit his parents at the end of July."

"Is this where I cue up the ominous music?" Mel asked.

"Well, I've survived vampires, witches, tentacle demons, crazy hellgods, mummies, being split in two, clowns, bug-people, trolls - well, a troll - and more zombies than you can shake an evil mask at. Meeting the parents of my underage boyfriend for the first time should be a cakewalk, right?" Xander looked hopeful for about two seconds. "I'm so totally toast."

Mel gave Xander a sympathetic pat on the back. "I think we're going to need to split that sundae."
